TD5 oil...
What oil do people have in there TD5's?

My local garage always use 5w/30 which goes against what the Haynes manual recommends. The manual states 5w/40 or 5w/50. Is there any major differences between the garages idea and the manuals.

I am going to perform my own service in the next 1500mls and want to gather opinions. I am heading towards draining and using the manual recommendation tbh but as both aren't cheap it real is down to the key differences. Tried to read up on the composite differences but as I don't have a degree in fuel chemicals I got bored v quickly.

Any help/ideas would be much appreciated. Previous

The Rave Workshop Manual for TD5 say ACEA A1 & B1 for 5W/30, 5W/40 or 5W/50.

so any of them would be OK and if i recall the 30,40 or 50 refers to high ambient temperature viscosity. the bigger the number the higher temp it can with stand. i have been told the 30 if fine for the UK, but i use 5w/40 normally BM52

For a TD5 in the uk you want a 5W30 oil which conforms to ACEA A1/B1 or a A5/B5 spec if you want to upgrade your oil. The A5/B5 oil is a better oil and will likely be a fully synthetic oil rather than a semi synthetic oil. Comma sell a good 5W30 oil and a good price which is A5/B5 compliant and wont break the bank (think about £15 for 5 litres from a good motor factor).

Changed the oil on my TD5 yesterday,

I got 5l of the Comma Xtech fully synthetic 5w30 for £22.99, i am sure they do a semi synthetic non all singing oil for less.

That was from a local motor factors, part of the Jaymar group which are all over. 2002 Defender 110 DC

We fit 5w30 semi synthetic in all standard spec and mildly modified Td5 models, but go to 5w40 fully synthetic in stronger remapped vehicles.

We stock full service kits, including 2 x 5L bottles of millers 5w30 semi synthetic. We usually buy our oils in bulk containers, but we may also have some 5w40 in 5L bottles. I'll have a look tomorrow, and see if I can put together a deal for forum members.

Yeh thats the stuff that i use, i buy 8 5litre barrels at at a time at £15 each, i do have a trade account though so that makes a difference. For semi synthetic 5W30, buying 8 at a time they cost me a little over £9 each.

I use 5w30 fully synthetic change every 6k.

I have been using unipart (Fuchs) API recognised oil meets all the criteria above was 20ltr for £48.00.

I stock genuine filters and give the customer the option of these as an upgrade. These are considerably more expensive than Mahle filters (from Bearmach) that I normally use. I find these are very good.

I also stock Mahle filters and fit them as standard unless otherwise asked.

Can i ask what your opinion of the Mahle filters is? Ive been using them for a while, as you say there is quite a large difference in price. I change all filters every 12k and oil every 6k and was wondering in your opinion if its worth buying genuine filters? At the moment i my land rover is standard tune but have removed the cat and EGR valve.

The different makes of centrifugal filters I find are quite variable, and these are the most important for a Td5 engine. I've tried some of these, and I've not been able to hear them winding down after stopping the engine (which you should). Shocked

Change your centrifugal filter at every oil service! Exclamation

I will always use genuine filters on my own cars. I just know they are 100%, as I can't be doing with oil issues on my tarmac tearing Td5's!!! Laughing

Yeh i had one where a brass bush on the filter came loose, wasnt one i fitted though. I always listen for the filter winding down, sometimes its hard to hear it but if i put my hand on the filter housing you can feel it slowing down and stop. I know what you mean about using genuine for yours, they get a little harder work than mine! Laughing

Is the general consensus then - use genuine if you've added the performance toys and the Mahle ones are ok for TD5's that have yet to get the upgrades?

And the same seems to apply for Oil too.

Just serviced mine, bought a full kit online including 2 x 5litre comma 5w30 semi sythetic, which included coopers and bearmach filters for £55.......at that price I will be doing it twice per year, enjoyed doing it aswell. Thumbs Up Life is not a rehearsal!
