Clutch master cylinder change with ABS
Hi,

I am 80% through my clutch change but also want to change the master cylinder.... according to the manual i need to disconnect the abs lines, which requires technology i dont have to rebleed them. Is it possible to change the master without removing the pipes that run across the clutch pedal box? I am hoping there is enough wiggle room!

Bleeding the brakes is nothing special even on an ABS Defender - fill reservoir, open bleed screw, pump pedal. It takes a little longer as there is more pipework to get the air out of but you don't need to put the ABS pump into a bleed mode or anything.

I haven't been out to look at my 2.4, but i don't remember seeing any pipes blocking the access panel for the cluch master cylinder?

You just undo the lines heading into the master, undo the 2 bolts pull it off and refit. Takes about 30 mins

But like i said bleeding the brakes is nothing special. Having just double checked RAVE the bleed procedure for a TD5 with abs is just a standard pump the pedal and open nipples job.

This is a 2.2. the td5 one you mention is odd because on a td5 disco you need technology to purge the abs pump otherwise that can contain air. Must be different systems.

Anyway, am currently fighting the master cylinder and box arrangement to get it out without disturbing the brakes... this may involve swearing. V8 90...WIP

the Discovery brakes are different, its only the engine that is the same.

Some early ABS systems, early 90's Honda's for example you HAD to put the pump into purge mode with a computer. More recent systems you just bleed as normal. Those that still have a purge mode it's just to speed up the process, or if you replace the ABS unit. Which is what it says in the D2 manual "If replacing parts upstream of the brake modulator including the modulator its self...." anything down stream you don't need to.

Cheers for that. Anyway, for those seeking answers in future, the master cylinder is simple to change even if you have abs. Once you realise you can get to the master cylinder bottom bolt with a 10mm spanner up through the pedal box from inside the car that is...

The old unit was full of black crud, pretty bad for 40k miles of use.
