I think the side repeaters were spec dependant rather than age in the early days. There are lots of pictures of earlier vehicles with them fitted. Darren

My October 85 has the side repeaters. I tend to like the wings without them personally.

A turn of events...
Having bought a new half chassis for this I found an unused complete galvanised chassis from failed project with 200tdi mounts at the right money, so seemed like a good idea. So, anyone want a half chassis, or I might repair the old chassis as planned to have a good non galv chassis (with front leg replaced) for another project. With the new chassis I plan to paint it with direct to galv paint and waxoyl inside. One problem I've found is that the fuel tank mounting has a cradle for the later plastic one, but I have a new metal one - does anyone know if this can still be used? |

New chassis all painted up now
Td5 tank with 300tdi discovery sender unit in the tank seems to fit. I haven’t got a locking ring for this yet, so probably a good idea anyway to refit the discovery fuel tank access plate in the rear tub floor. The only problem I see is steel versus aluminium, but it will be painted etc Dismantling of the “old defender”, rear tub resting on a box and I’ll lift the roof and rear side windows off in one go. Strip down continues, didn’t take long for front end strip down and engine out, so hopefully soon actual rebuilding on the new chassis.
Decided to strip bonnet and galvanise the frame, although the bonding glue is quite tough to saw through. Although it’s not the standard look, the rrar tub capping are off the be galvanised, except the corner ones which unfortunately I think are too rust pitted to reuse. Click image to enlarge |
