Replacing viscous fan with electric
Hi all,

I am planning to buy a td5 pickup, and to build a custom model. I have been looking at some modifications, and thanks for the info on here, I have plenty of ideas.

One was to replace the viscous fan with a pen electric one. This is done on lots of cars from older vintages, however, will it suit a td5?

Any requirements or other considerations?

I would have said an electric fan on a Td5 would be fine. I have run no cooling fan for the last 2 years plus and haven't had an issue at all. Including towing Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Whatever you do put something like a fan in. Crafty can be right that he never needed it but I have had my temp gauge in the right corner a few times already. But I have to admit alwaays off-road with my 35" Simexes in deep mud where I needed all power to keep moving.

I didn't think about changing mine yet. The viscous fan is working fine, I don't hear it and I don't believe It will save fuel if I would change to electric. But then I didn't build my 90 to save fuel.

I ran with out a fan for about 6 months with no problems and then re fitted a viscous I am about to remove and fit an electric one as the viscous had failed yet again 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

In normal temperatures, TD5 runs without any fan, or with some electrical fan. But in very hot summer - in south Europe or Africa, electrical fan is just not enough. It has much smaller power, compared to the original one. I have experience from our summer trips with overloaded Disco2 TD5 - during steep climbing, I was surprised from an unusual noise - like a starting plane. It was just the fan fully working for first time. When I was standing behind the car, I was feeling the hot air pushed by this fan. So for me original fan only.
And another experience - after some muddy offroad, it is necessary to clean all coolers. Coolers full of mud, or partly full, are not working good. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂ­nek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
