Ford Ranger 3.2 Conversion into a 110 Puma Defender Advice
Hi folks,
I'm a little curious as to how to go about doing this 3.2L conversion here in Aus.
We get the ford ranger locally delivered in auto and manual, with the 3.2L TDCI.

I was hoping someone here could clarify a few things. I have searched, and i've seen the various topics.

Engine - Fits the original puma mounts. Yes it does! Thumbs Up

Gearbox - MT85 from the 3.2. Assume a manual. How does the transfer case from the puma fit? What is required there? Do i need parts from my Puma MT82 box?

Wiring - Can i use the 3.2 wiring and ECU and mate it to the puma system? Or go stand alone ECU?

Front/Rear Tail shaft - Does it need to be modified?

Radiator/intercooler - Factory puma OKAY?

I will be looking to get a complete Ranger as a wrecker. So it can be either auto or manual, but probably a manual to make life easy. So i will have the complete wiring, ecu's etc at my disposal.

At the moment, my 110 Puma chassis is being galvanised. So everything is off. I figure this would be the best time to do this conversion. Shocked

Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Bell Auto Services (BAS) have done the conversion and should be able to supply the wiring loom to match it all up so you can still use your original dash, ABS, TC and other electricals.

BAS were selling a kit that included motor/box/electricals for the UK customers but from memory it was pretty exy !

Another company that are selling 3.2L converted Defenders is Icon, may be contact them.

Hey Chewy,

The extension housing from the PUMA's MT82 will bolt straight onto the MT85 and then onto the LT230 transfer case.

The question on this end of the box is will the output shaft on the MT85 match the LT230 ? or do you use the output shatf from the MT82 and does that fit the MT85?

The 3.2 ranger conversion hasn't been done and needs around 10k of development before it will be done unless someone is willing to spend that to start with I doubt it will be being done any time soon ?

It's a different opera ting system to the transit 3.2

Hi Big Steve, been reading your replies to the forum, and noticed that you had already done the conversion. I have found myself a salvage 3.2 ranger, next job is to swap with my 2.4. I would like to carry the automatic transmission from the ranger into the defender, have you tried that? (the salvage vehicle is an automatic)
Hoping i can put on the defenders transfer box.
Any suggestions on how you went about the wiring, so that the original instrument cluster can work?

Thanks in advance

Guch

Hi as said in previouse posts

The ranger 3.2 engine is different ecu therefore has not been cracked and has not been made to run yet
Company's like je engineering have got the engine on a standalone ecu which is not right as the engine is far better with its own ecu to to run it
They also offer the gearbox conversion

I am looking into this myself for my 3.2 but need a complete ranger for development and then tbh we will probly look into getting the engine to run standalone also

Ive located a salvage Ranger, working on a deal with the guy at the moment, he is looking for too much money compared to the costs you have given.
Let me PM you.
