German motorways
Dragging the Rib from Zeebrugge to Zadar Croatia via Munich soon Mr. Green I've noticed in past trips the German motorways have signs saying HGVs & trailers no overtaking Shocked
I understand why but I don't want to be stuck behind a slow truck or caravan doing 80 kph when I can do 100 kph
So my question is do they enforce it much.

Hi, I don't know about the police enforcing it, but maybe this map could help you to avoid those longer sections: https://transitfrei.de/Womothemen/Uebersic...obahn.html

Mick, I last got pulled over towing my rib down to Lake Constance about ten years ago, overtaking in a restricted zone. A police car has spotted me from a layby and pulled us over. I can remember being exrremely annoyed at the ticket and 1 point, at the the time.

Generally people take notice of the sign, but like everywhere else, there are less and less patrol cars than there used to be, and the Germans donīt have anything like the amount of camera surveilance that the UK has.

We just drove down to Sibenik last week, with the rib behind our 90. An easy drive, to be honest. Only a short delay at the Slovenian/Croatian border, although weīd been warned of worse.

The restrictions normally apply when there is a slow incline to prevent wagons etc overtaking when going up hills as they do in this country (especially the A66), such overtaking wagons slow fast moving traffic. Alway thought this should be adopted on all roads in UK.

I remember driving army convoys and to avoid holding up faster wagons we would move over into the hard shoulder to let them past so they did not have to enter the overtaking lane. Jeff

Yes they enforce it. We towed to Croatia in convey with about 4 others. Overtaking in a row we couldn't work out why we were suddenly alone. Seems the police had gradually pulled everyone behind us and fined them. We got away with it being in front. They are also strict on commercial movements on Sundays, especially in Bavaria, so beware of that too.

YES, they do enforce it. I got pulled overtaking in the D2 with an empty trailer and it was an on the spot fine!

Do not be fooled if the sign appears to say HGV not overtaking cars!

German motorway slip road with 40 kph sign (road works zone). Mobile speed camera and at least 4 cars pulled over having a serious chat with the police seen today.

Obey the signs and the restrictions and you will be fine. Get pulled by German police whilst towing they will ask for the 'auto passport' for the trailer as trailers in Europe have their own identity papers! Also many LR V5 do not have towing/goss train weights on which confuse them.

Best to try and avoid the police by obeying their rules.

I was over there the other week. Not sure of your route, but if you are heading from Koln down to Nuremburg for instance, using the E31/E42 via Frankfurt then there are masses of contra-flow sections due to road works. Anything with a trailer is banned from overtaking in this area, so there are miles and miles of artics and caravans etc just stuck.

I would try and find another route if you can or go by Series One like I did! Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

All through the Roadworks are yellow signs indicating that anything with a trailer or caravan etc is banned from overtaking - so, its not just like the normal truck style no overtaking signs. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Also just come back from the Balkans and there were major queues southbound from Koln area on 61 heading down past Koblenz, roadworks. No major problems elsewhere though. Stopped off at Zadar and things were relatively quite but told that would change within a couple of weeks by locals.
The autobahn from Karlsruhe down to Freiburg is mostly no overtaking massive convoys on that some times. At least that is not on the croatia route.

It might not be an option for you, but I would suggest looking at doing the run down through France (where you can legally tow your rib at 80 mph). Calais, Reims Metz, Stuttgart, Munich and so on. Relatively little traffic on the toll roads, and the Stuttgart to Munich Autobahn is finally getting to the point where it really is a fast and efficient connection (after about 25 years of road works). Avoid passing Munich at rush hour. Its peripheral is like the M25 sometimes. Just a thought! Whistle 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

I'm so jealous of you going to Zadar. We stayed there for 4 days a few yrs ago. Stayed in Hotel Bastion, 4* hotel and only 160€ for a double room.
We sat for hours on the front listening to the sea organ. Very relaxing. 110 D250 SE HT
