Without hearing it I wouldn't know, but a few years ago and at a similar mileage I had a similar audible phenomenon on my 300Tdi. I looked at all sorts of things before giving up and taking it to an Indy. We were going to take it for a drive but as soon as I started to pull out of the parking space the chap said "no need that's the exhaust manifold gasket". It was he was right it had fractured around the hole on the nearest cylinder to the bulkhead. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Again, difficult to be sure of a described sound, but I remember something similar on my old 300tdi Discovery being the vacuum pump on its' way out. Darren

I am sure this is not the noise but could it be the speedo cable ticking inside the speedo head???
 If so some oil or a grease at the head end would quieten it Jeff

Mine was making a fairly loud ticking noise that gradually got worse. The head gasket had gone and was blowing out at the back near the bulkhead.
Obviously there's a whole range of possible ticking noises, this one was fairly loud, easily audible above idle engine noise and the ticking frequency increased with engine revs. Hope this helps  Matt.

Thanks for all the replies.
Vacuum pump replaced with a genuine Wabco pump about 1 year ago. Doesn't make the noise at tickover, just when it comes onto boost. Can you upload a video onto this page? |

Yes, increases with engine speed.
Put my hand behind head and can't feel any blowing. |

you can spray the area when it running, not sure if it soapy water, or wd 40,
 but something like that, and it blows bubbles, if its leaking |

Definately head gasket. Took head off tonight and its blowing out the rear.
I was told the head would need a skim but the LandRover book says not to. I havn't checked the flatness yet but anyone know if you can skim the head? |

I had mine skimmed when it was doing the same thing.
It really depends if it has been skimmed before. You can tell by looking at the gasket. It will have a certain thickness indicated by the holes on the outside I believe but I can't quite remember which holes indicate what thickness of gasket (hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along to explain). If you do get it skimmed, you will need to fit a slightly thicker gasket when you put it back on to compensate for the material removed. Hope this helps . Matt.

It has a 3 hole gasket fitted which is the thickest I believe.
Havn't measured piston protrusion yet. |

Checked head flatness with a parallel. Very very flat. Cannot measure any defect where its blowing. Cannot measure a 0.001" gap with a clock or feeler. I think it may just be a min to clean to remove any imperfections.

Have you checked to see if it's marked the block where it was blowing? If it hasn't marked the head then the block should be fine but worth a check. Matt.
