Anyone have list of problems that cause limp mode?
Hi

My 2007 Puma has gone into limp home 3 times in 7 months, otherwise it runs faultlessly. On each occasion slight increase in accelerator from 80 kph initiated limp mode. There are no fault codes, not running hot, and each time switch off and re-start and back to perfect operation with full power.

A list of factors setting off limp mode might help me. Or maybe someone has suggestions please?

Cheers
Mogboy

Sudden loss of coolant used to do it on Transits, you should get some kind of fault code if the ECU is putting it into Limp mode.

What you probably have is something failing which is causing a loss of power rather than the ECU detecting a fault and giving you restricted performance.

Volume Control valve on the fuel pump could do it an EGR that's mechanically failed could also do it i think.

Did you get a diagnosis and fix your issue Mogboy? My 07 2.4 has the same problem. It happens about once every 6 weeks and at all other times runs faultlessly.

Clean MAP and MAF sensors, this isn't a cure all solution but they won't always throw up and codes if very dirty.
The MAF especially can cause a lot of issues!
If it doesn't solve it, it won't do any harm.

We are taking Defenders here, right Whistle

Just last week I went through the full list of recommendations mentioned above, as I had a series of limp moments, only to find it was (very) low on coolant. Note it was NOT showing on the dash temp guage. Certainly give that a check, as it stopped as soon as I had refilled to the correct amount. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Limp mode with yellow check engine light happened a few times to me when truck was still very new. Restarting usually solved it temporarily. Proved to be a faulty functioning EGR valve, once dealer replaced that problem gone.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

My wife was towing a horse in a horse box and the defender went bang and reverted to limp mode. After a call to me and her visual inspection (reporting nothing obvious) she continued about a mile to her destination. I drove over to meet her and investigate to find a tell tale dribble of oil on the floor and the intercooler hose a good 2 inches off the intercooler. She hadn't noticed this and thankfully a simply fix to get her home without limping... Phil
