I can't see how any of it is legal?
To maintain the original plate, a certain proportion of the original vehicle has to be retained, as the chassis, the engine and basically all of the interior and body has been replaced I can't quite see how they've managed this?

It is not illegal if is it (say) a 1998 TDi which has a vanity plate, with the plate first issued in '68.

It is most definitely illegal if it is recorded as being a 1968 vehicle.

This was a widespread practice at one time to sell new-ish vehicles at inflated prices to gullible or misguided Americans to get round the less-than-25-year-old import ban. A well-known and infamous comapny in Maidenhead being a major practitioner.

It would be interesting to know if the eBay ad that was pulled was for a vanity plate on retainer (legal) or a V5 and identity of a '68 Landrover (highly illegal) - I presume the latter as the ad was pulled, in which case the vehicle must be illegal too.

And people still buy these things!

Incidentally, whenever I see a listing on eBay for a Landrover identity I report it since it is illegal and only really useful in order to "ring" a stolen vehicle. This is an activity of which I am highly intolerant, and I feel it is in everybody's interest if we all do what we can to make life difficult for criminals.

Well they are certainly advertising it as a "1968 model year, fully restored and upgraded" The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

The ad on piston heads from ebay shows a V5 next to the plates. Unfortunately I cant zoom in far enough to check it is for those plates. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.
