Forgive my lack of understanding but how do you get enough pressure with that little grease gun to push out the firmer old grease ?

Aha, I assume that you mean the centre of the UJ (the middle of the joint) rather than the yoke, in which case it won't help at all.

I.e., like this:-





All my UJs, whether original factory fit or later replacements, have straight nipples which bisect one of the UJ angles and come out between yokes.
I.e., like this:-






A long nipple brings the greasegun coupler outside the joint completely.

I wonder why you have oddball UJs.

And I have no connection/union issues with my gun, it's a cheapy, large cartridge style one with flex hose... Just lucky??

Bought an old Wanner one recently on the advice of the forum (the one I currently have is heavy!), but I haven't filled it yet. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Ok, forgive my naivety but as the owner of a two year old defender how often should I grease my nipples? Embarassed The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

So is it just a case of greasing every nipple you can find just in case or are there certain ones I should be looking at?

There are only six, assuming that your vehicle has all the nipples it should. Many vehicles left the factory with fewer than 6 nipples, and there have been various service actions about replacing propshafts if your vehicle is deficient in the nipple department, but it is doubtful anything will have been done unless you've asked.

Each propshaft should have three nipples, one on each UJ and one on the splined extensible coupling (this is the one most commonly not fitted).

The correct way to grease them is:-

  1. Disconnect propshaft flanges from gearbox/axle (or at least one end of propshaft)
  2. Clean nipples
  3. For each nipple in turn, inject a couple of shots of grease with greasegun whilst articulating the joint to distribute lubricant
  4. Wipe off any surplus grease
  5. Reattach propshaft


Having said that, the more common way is:-


  1. Crawl under vehcile
  2. For each nipple in turn, attempt to attach greasegun in order to inject a couple of shots of grease
  3. Fuind that it is impossible to attache gun squarely/at all, and when pumped grease squirts everywhere except into the nipple
  4. Think "Oh [insert your own naughty word here]! Stuff it, I'll just replace the UJs when they wear out!"
  5. Exit from under the vehicle in a foul mood and despatch greasegun into far reaches of garage/workshop.


It is easier if you raise one wheel of each axle in turn very slightly off the ground so that you can rotate the propshaft when either greasing or unbolting it.

Alternatively, using a chainsaw greasegun:-


  1. Crawl under vehcile
  2. For each nipple in turn, press greasegun firmly agains nipple and watch as grease squirts out between the nipple and the gun and drops onto your face, due to the plug of dried up old grease which is blocking the nipple
  3. Attempt to unscrew the blocked nipple to fit a new unblocked one, only to find that you don't have a socket or box spanner that fits in the restricted space avaialble
  4. Say a few naughty words, then remove the propshaft from the vehicle in order to articulate the joints enough to get a socket on the nipple, and change the nipples
  5. Have an epiphineal moment and realise that as the propshaft is now off the vehicle anyway, you might as well use a full-size greasegun and articulate the joints while greasing in order to do the job properly
  6. Refit the propshaft secure in the knowledge of a job well done
  7. Give the chainsaw greasegun to someone who has a chainsaw!


Only kidding, of course, and no offence intended! Rolling with laughter

Whatever method works best for you is the method to use, and if you find a chainsaw greasegun works for you, then go for it. It certainly will have the smallest tip of any type, and as long as the grease goes in, will work fine.

No, please don't be, it is a good tip. My last post was intended to be in jest.

If a chainsaw greasegun gets the grease into the nipples it is a totally satisfactory way of doing the job, and definitely easier to get into the space available.
