MAF Sensor and Cruise Control
Hi,

I hope the fountain of knowledge can help here. Bow down

My 2.2 is at the stealers after being recovered when the old P0101 MAF sensor fault put her into limp mode.

Now.............after nearly 2wks they are suggesting the Cruise control unit i had fitted is causing the problem.
The cruise control from Mobile Centre and the same type fitted to countless Defenders, unit has been fitted for over a year with no issues.

Am i correct to be sceptical or is this a problem others have experienced.

Still waiting for the dealer to present me with the full report. Mad Defender Puma 110XS SW

I would be very sceptical and would be asking a raft of questions as to why the cruise control would/could cause the MAF sensor to fail. There is no physical connection between the two (assuming the CC unit was fitted correctly).

Get them to show you any connections and prove to you why they think it is this way.

Sounds like a blame the customer attitude - quite disappointing. My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender.

Faulty MAF Sensor
Have the stealers swapped the MAF sensor and cleared the fault?

I've got a 2014 2.2 Puma with 30k on the clock and have a Mobile Centre Cruise Control fitted from new, all good.

Except have had two instances @ 16k and 30k with the motor going into limp Mode and showing the P0101-Mass or Volume Airflow-Circuit Range Performance.

Both times it turned out to be ruptured intercooler, not the MAF sensor or loose / ruptured hoses which is the usual cause.

In must admit my local main dealer did diagnose the first fault when my local garage couldn't (got a spare MAF sensor in my tool box now).

They were brilliant (Farnells Bradford) as they diagnosed, washed valeted and returned FOC, because the intercooler had been "upgraded".

Hope this helps?

Firstly, shout out to Mobile Centre for the quick response on the query I sent them on this matter.

Thanks to you guys for the response, certainly armed me with a few more questions.

I'll put a list of Info/symptoms below just in case a few more ideas pop up.

- Engine untouched apart from cruise control.
- She has 37k on her and the boost hoses were changed at 25k due to splitting
- The AA who initially attended cleared the fault on the side of the road but it returned during the quick road test.
- on both occasions the cruise control unit was switched off
- on both occasions the urban driving was all good with the fault only appearing when accelerating up to speed to join a dual carriage way.

In reference to the split intercooler, would this issue have the potential to only show at higher engine speeds and engine load eg. higher boost pressure for a sustained period of time while accelerating up to 70mph.

I have an appointment with the workshop manager this afternoon so he can explain the journey taken for them to reach the conclusion they have.
One comment I did get from the service desk yesterday was that the cruise unit is Spiking the MAF sensor!!!! not even sure this is possible?

As a further insult because this is no longer deemed a 'warranty issue' they want to charge me £924 in labour for the time spent on it.

Intercooler Issues
The intercooler fault will only happen when you put your boot down! It is related to the amount pressure put on the system.

My motor went into limp mode two weeks ago while towing on a country road. Stopped switch motor off and back on (engine management light came on).

Managed to drive 60 miles on the motorway using gentle throttle with the trailer, but as soon as I got home unhitched the trailer and gave it a bit of throttle up a hill went into limp mode again.!!

If it is the intercooler and you've not upgraded it should be covered on your warranty, cheeky blighters!!

Hope this helps.

Cheers WYL

does not sound like a cruse control fault if you have no joy get on to customer relations via this site. any fault apart from retro fits should be under warranty and need further investigation .DONT get fobbed off

Update:

Epic fail by dealer.
So.............Had my appointment with the workshop manager and also the 'Master Tech' who worked on fault.

After the usual banter we got down to the nitty gritty of them explaining to me what they had done/tested and more importantly explaining to me how the various connections from the cruise control could possibly affect the MAF sensor.

More talking, nodding of heads and pointing at things........and then.......... a very nice sheet of paper produced by the 'Master Tech' showing various circuit diagrams with scribbled pin numbers and voltage readings

"Took these readings from the throttle pedal harness of the cruise control unit" he says.

"Interesting" I said.

"The cruise control is interfering with the voltages to the ECU" he says.

"That's sort of the point" I said "It needs to do that to replicate the throttle function when it's controlling the speed" I also say.

"I've disconnected the cruise from the loom and now I cant get the fault to come back" He says

Anyway, you get the idea.
the long and short of it is I took for a test before I agreed to pay anything and promptly made it 1/4 mile from the dealer before the fault light came back on.

Needless to say they are having another go.................Not sure what is worse, all the messing around or the Disco 5 they have given me to use! Defender Puma 110XS SW

Well done for standing your ground with the stealer, and also great that the fault is identified.

I need to check my 14 CSW now for this cooler!

Thanks! My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender.

Amazing (or should I say shocking) to read that some dealers still have so little knowledge about a car as straightforward as a Defender Shocked Shocked .
Image you encounter this with a Disco 5 (just saying .... ) ?

Glad to hear it will soon be behind you Thumbs Up Peter,
