Clutch or turbo problem?
Hi guys n gals,

Last week, got in the car to drive home...pulled out of the space at work the car shuddered, lost power, engine management light came on but then it was ok (so I thought). Going up the driveway, it felt a tad sluggish throughout all gears but I don't really gather speed on the drive out of the estate. Got onto the main road, it was clearly struggling. It is a real slog just to get to 30mph and if you introduce the slightest of inclines, i've got a queue of people behind me beeping their horns.

I have had a stage 2 remap, straight through decat, EGR blanked, allisport intercooler and silicone pipes on a defender TD5. All going super since January. So, I assumed that maybe something had gone awry here and I was going into limp mode or had a split pipe or something. I whacked the nanocom on and there are 2 faults that stand out - 3.8 Manifold Pressure Circuit (logged high) and 5.8 Manifold Pressure Circuit (current). I downloaded the data after a crawl around the block and could see the Turbo Pressure was showing as 0 throughout. So, assumed no pressure for turbo and therefore no oomph in drive. I've checked all the hoses, there is a bit of oil on the intercooler mid left side but can't see any obvious splits or cracks (and wouldn't expect one - I do not 'rag' the car, not by any means). I've cleaned the MAF, checked my crank position sensor etc.. I also disconnected the 'boost box' which tricks the ECU boost values as I know they have been known to cause problems. So, today I fitted a boost gauge (temporarily to the actuator pipe but will drill and tap intake next week) and low and behold, 15ish PSI max - so it is getting boost!

Now I think about it, a few weeks back my floorwell was caked in brown gunk and when I checked the reservoir, it was empty. But, filled that up and haven't had a problem since...until now of course. I had similar a couple of years ago but put a new clutch master in and it's been fine - so I know the gunk (as do my trainers)

So, have I been looking at this the wrong way, assuming it's the performance increase and something directly related to that? Or, am I chasing a red herring and it's actually just my clutch on the way out?

What can I do to test the clutch?

Ta

If your clutch is gone the engine wil rev and you don't really get more speed. Best to try in 4th gear start at about 1500 rpm and with full throttle somewhere just above 200 rpm your revs will go up more quickly then your speed. If that happens your clutch is on the way out.
The symptoms you mentione sound to me something engine, turbo or sensor related. Roel

Sounds like either a failed map sensor or if you have a dual channel limit box on the ecu (when stage 2 tuned) then that could have failed. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

You may have a split in the pressurised turbo hoses. Sometimes they are barely visible and can hold pressure intimitently depending on conditions, heat etc. It's not common for MAF or MAP's to completely fail other than just being dirty. If this is the case there should be DTC's logged but not always. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Even with a split hose however you would see some turbo pressure and almost definitely hear it. Try removing and cleaning the MAP sensor to see if that changes anything Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Check MAP sensor - normally it should show some pressure in live data on Nanocom - nearly the same as ambient pressure (approx. 100 kPa) , and with slight increase (approx. 150 kPa in standard car) after good short revving the engine in not moving car. Simultaneously, the ambient pressure should drop a bit (from 100 kPa to 98 kPa). "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

As above, MAP sensor most likely culprit.

Thanks guys, I have a new MAP sensor coming. Fingers crossed it's that Smile

Here are a few lines from my log on the drive in for reference;

Turbo Pressure 0 in table - this is MAP and is not good. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Replaced the MAP, goes like poop off a shovel!

So, it was the MAP!

Great news, the MAP does have a great deal of difference on performance.

Did you go Genuine or OEM? Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I figured like the MAF, genuine would be best Smile Some things i'll go OEM, but not everything

It actually goes a bit quicker than after remapped so maybe it's been on the way out for a while... Could the remap (extra heat) possibly have caused it?

Thank for your help TD5 Defender 90

After all this, I've now tapped my manifold and fitted a boost gauge Wink Peaking at about 19psi (about 1.3 bar)

I assume you have used Nanocom to record the data to an SD card?
Is turbo pressure the same as the map reading? 1999 Defender TD5 110
