Which wheel for 285's?
Hi!

I'm new to the forum, so please take it gently. I've been browsing the net for a couple days now, but can't really find an exact answer for my question, which is:

If we are talking steel wheels, 8-spoke or Modulars, 16 inch dia, and I were to use 285/75r16 BFG M/T Km2's, which would be the ideal wheel to go for?

1, 16x7 ET0
2, 16x8 ET0
3, 16x7 ET8
4, 16x8 ET8

I'm also fitting a Terrafirma TF209 Medium load 2" lift with the new wheels & tires, but don't want to loose much of the steering locks (not sure if rim width affects it). Don't want to cut the body, cutting plastic flares is ok however, should it be needed.

I would guess that option #2 would be the best (that's what my research shows), but if I could get away (safely, without breaking beds / sidewalls) with option #1, that is what I'd prefer - even if it's short half an inch from BFG's recommendation. But I could fit 235 or 255 or 265's on that rim as well, while the 8" would rule out the 235's I guess.
I rather want to read about real world experiences than white paper specifications:)

So I know this has been talked over a thousand times, but please help an LR newbie who has to make a fast decision as I have to order parts this week.

Please don't try to talk me out of the 285'sSmile)) I know they're not the best option for many, but I really like them.

16x8 ET0 should be fine, to be honest, all of them should be okay 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

I have 285 75 r16s on 16 x 8 wheels +10 offset and they fit nicely with no rubbing on the body with standard height springs. The only rubbing is the inner edge of the back tyres touching the spring mounts occasionally in a cross-axle scenario. The spring mounts on a 90 chassis are smaller so imagine there would be no rubbing.

0 offset wheels would be nice for a little extra steering lock but it's not bad really. The tyres do throw an awful lot of muck up the sides so consider a front mud flap kit from the likes of Gwyn Lewis, they work well.

Thank you guys, appreciate the replies!

x8 seems to be the bet:) (my only concern is that I can only source modulars of it, and I like the looks of the 8-spoke more, but if it's the better way to go, I can live with it)

Mud on the side is okay for me, that's how a proper Landy should be, isn't it anyways?Smile

Anyone with 16x7 steels running 285/75r16 maybe, just to have opinions about that world?

(I believe that an offset of -10 gives better steering clearence than a 0 offset does, as the -10 sits further out than a 0 or positive offset wheel does)

I've seen many fit them to 7" boost or zu-s without problems, but didn't find any info about fitting to 7" steels.

Apologies, i made a typo above. My wheels are +10 so 10mm further inboard than a 0 offset.

I have in the past run 285/75 mud tyres (KL71s and KM2s) on 16x7 ET33 Boosts without problems, but in order to avoid embarrassment at corners, junctions and roundabouts I fitted 30mm spacers. So 16x7 ET3 works fine.

There are many who say that you shouldn't fit 285s to a 7" rim, and it may be "not recommended" by the manufacturer, but it seems to work fine; they're just a little harder to fit.

In the end I moved away from 285/75 to 255/85, since (a) wide tyres really don't help in conditions of poor adhesion, and there's no way that you can get wide enough for effective flotation, (b) the exterior of the vehicle is permanently plastered in crapola, and (c) their road manners aren't that good, with severe tramlining etc. The 255/85 is effectively the same diameter but a much more "comfortable" width, as well as working better in most off-road conditions.

Just my opinions and experience, of course, and what works for one won't necessarily float someone else's boat.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but what I am saying is that a 285 section tyre cannot work as it was designed to on a 7" rim.
If possible have a look at how the tyre looks fitted on a 7", & on an 8"+ rim,....the tyre will be "squashed" on a 7" rim.
On hard surfaces, particularly at higher speeds, handling will be affected.

Okay, I've ordered the 16x8" et0 modulars, thanks for all the input!

What came into my mind is that while the 16x7"s might work well when everything is fine, but should there be any anomaly, like a puncture or what not, they might not hold the bed as well as the 16x8" do(?). I feel that this was the safer way to go.

So the wheels got delivered and they are fine, but.. They're lug centric, and there is a gap between the hub's center and the wheels center all around. Is this a problem?
