Bleeding fuel filter (Td5) [solved]

Having changed the fuel filter I can't get the engine to start. In the Haynes Manual there are two (different) procedures ...

Neither method works for me; I have put the old filter back on (there was nothing wrong with it & no water in the trap that I could see) to see if the new filter was dodgy.

Elsewhere on the inter-web I read that "First, turn the ignition key to position II so the warning lights come on and press the accelerator 5 times before the engine management light goes out. This puts the engine in to purge mode and the system will start to bleed itself. This can take quite a few minutes and you will hear the pump go through quite a few cycles. The engine
management light will flash and continue to flash until all the air is expelled from the system. When the engine management light goes out, turn the key and it should burst into life." ... but again to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Do it a few times. Method 2 is what has worked for me in the past, but needs repeating unless you lose the "squelching" noise of air in the fuel system.

Another tip, though a little late

is to fill the filter up with fuel and then fit!

Hmmm, seems it _might_ have been a bit low on fuel.

. I knew it didn't have loads in, but never thought it would be that sensitive to low quantity. Still, 20 litres has solved my problem
