Defender one piece door to series door conversion
Morning All,
I am considering converting from a one piece door set up on the front doors, to a two piece series door conversion set. I have replaced the rear safari door with a SP 4x4 one recently and had no problems with the product or quality.
SP4x4 do the series door conversion kits and from what I have read here and on other lesser forums they seem ok.
I want to ensure that I order all the relevant parts etc ahead of this project so I am asking you guys:-
From experience, other than the basic conversion kit, what else do I need to order in.
So far above the kit I have considered foam gasket for the lock (like the one on the back door), the anti burst lock surround. I have looked at the galv. door capping that sits between the lower and upper door pieces. How does that fit?. Is there any thing else??.
Thanks guys- in anticipation...... Bow down

Morning guy's and Gal's,
Reading other peoples threads it appears SP doors (series conversion) have been used previously by some of you.
I am going to order these doors over the next few days and really need your help and guidance as to what to order over the basic kit. I have identified some extras ie. galv. strip that sits on top of the lower door, foam gaskets for between the lock and door, anti burst lock surrounds. Will I need any additional bits, bolts , screws ?. I also note that there appears to be a door bottom rubber seal ( on series doors) that can be bought, should I get these too.
Any help would be greatfully received,
Cheers S Smile

I have a set of their doors and they are great Thumbs Up

Bits you will need:

Doors
Windows
Cappings left /right (they are handed)
Each capping is held in place by 3 rivets
Anti-burst locks left/right
Barrels for the above
Gaskets for the locks
Retaining plates/screws for the locks.

Sorry the list is a bit jumbled if you look on my Jasmin rebuild thread you will see the prep I did for the doors, I Davies you do similar to make them last longer Thumbs Up 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

I don't have the SP doors but fitted a pair of series doors and military alloy door tops to my 90 and love them, especially with the roof off.

The SP kit looks pretty comprehensive, the doors look adapted to work with the once piece door stays which is a nice feature.

It would be worth throwing some dinitrol or similar into the frames and possibly new door hinge bolts whilst you have them apart but Mash's list seems to have everything else. Consider a bit of soundproofing for the inside, you may wish to line them also, I used plywood and carpet purely to mount speakers but will change to chequer soon because the carper holds mud.

Mash, Harry O., my thanks for the above info. Have either of you fitted the door bottom rubber seal, I believe it's held on by rivits ?. Also I am sure I read somewhere on this site that the casting of the strikes is questionable. I had no problems with the one on the safari door but thought I would ask. Thanks chaps, S Very Happy

Mine used a Defender bottom seal originally which was attached to the sill rather than the door. I also fitted some felt draught excluder around the inner edge of the door top as a secondary seal and that worked well.

No issues with the strikers, mine were Britpart ones. You may wish to fit the plastic seatbelt shields to the strikers, they prevent ripping your trousers on the strikers jumping in/out and also stop the seatbelts getting chewed when the door is closed.

Thanks Harry for the info advice. I had heard that you can get hung up, on the strikers!, and rip your strides in the process. Best get the doors ordered up and sort out some paint. Cheers S Very Happy
