On the way home today, the engine was starting to run rough an losing power. I had to change down in gears to keep going. After a few km it gave up and then refused to start. Engine temperature was normal all the time and warning lights also behaved normally.
Luckily enough, another Defender stopped and gave me a tow all the way home. Excellent service. Thanks Rodolphe! When I got home I tried to start it again and it started with some hesitation but running very rough (on some cylinders only) It was getting late and too cold to make further investigations I went in and poured a whisky  .
Tomorrow I have to figure out what the problem might be. Have you guys any ideas? Fuel starvation? I noticed a lot of soot in the exhaust pipe but no abnormal smoke. I will make a search on this site for similar problems. Hans |

Short of the basics such as fuel filter and oil in loom - I would be investigating injector seals, fuel pump failure and crank sensor

Thanks for your advise guys.
This morning I did some further investigations. - Turned the key on. Engine lights work normally but there is no sound from the fuel pump. The engine starts but with hesitation and runs very rough. Switch the engine off. - Turned the key on and pressed the throttle five times. The engine goes to purging mode and the engine light starts flashing. But no sound from fuel pump. Switch of the key. My conclusion is fuel pump fuse, relay or pump. What do you think? In the manual I have managed to locate the fuse but there is nothing about the relay. On the Internet there is a lot of confusing info about the location. Anyone knows for sure? My car is TD5 and MY 2004. Thanks in advance! |

Thanks dorsetsmith for those diagrams.
I checked the No 4 fuse and it was ok. However, My relay configuration was different with only three relays. Two yellow and one black (also different in shape). Click image to enlarge Only the left relay was clicking when ignition was switched on. Swapping the yellow relays made no difference which to me indicate that they are ok. No indication of oil in the loom. Both connections are dry (loom was replaced two years ago). I also connected my Nanocom and it came up with two fault codes: (2.8 ) Ambient pressure circuit (logged low) (4.3 ) Coolant temperature circuit (logged high) I deleted both fault codes and they did not return. The engine was idling very rough during this operation and I also looked at the cylinder readings on the Nanocom and they fluctuated quite a lot. However, after a while the engine started to run smoother (still idling) and the Nanocom cylinder readings did not show any big fluctuations. I did not dare to take it on a test run as I had not found any faults. A final test o turning the ignition on still only gave a click from the left relay and no sound from the fuel pump. With this I left the Defender for today and will have another look tomorrow. Have you guys any ideas of what is going on? /Hans |

Is the function of the black fuel pump relay identical to the yellow glow plug relay and can they be swapped for testing purpose? Do you have any thoughts about the fault codes? /Hans |

With your Nanocom plug in can see engine RPM ?

Check the engine sensors such as the MAF, does the TD5 have a MAP sensor too or is that just th Puma?

The maf is easy to test. Just unplug it and see if the defender works better Ray
