"Type Approved" tow bar?
Hi All
I am looking to buy a second hand towbar to fit on my 2012 90 TDCi. Does the towbar have to have "Type Approved" stickers on it?
Thanks in advance.

It all depends on how your vehicle is registered, it it's shown on your v5c as a private car then any towbar has to be type approved. If however your vehicle is shown as light goods vehicle then no type approval is needed The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

Thanks for the reply.
I take it that you mean the "Taxation Class" as stated in section 4 (Vehicle details) of the V5c.
My car V5c says "Light goods vehicle", as a comparison, my wife's car V5c says "Diesel car"
I'm new to the system, just making sure Smile

That's right, as your defender is registered as a light goods vehicle or vehicle tax class N1 you don't need a type approved tow bar, but if you were fitting a tow bar to your wife's car it would have to be type approved and would indeed have a sticker showing it's type approval details. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

The genuine multiheight tow bars are only about 250 new from dealers and don't fetch much at all second hand. They seem to have the best paint finish on them, where as most of the after market ones the paint just seems to flake off after a few years.

Worth considering before you spend too much on a second hand one. Wink

But as above though, as your Defender is registered as a commercial vehicle you don't need type approval stickers, although it doesn't matter if it does have them either.
