The OP has replaced the chassis with a like for like replacement that is in no way inferior from a safety point of view. It doesn’t fit with the exact wording of the law, but equally it’s not been done to try and defraud or has resulted in an unsafe vehicle. Luckily, the OP seems to have taken on board and accepted that there is a legal way to go about this which produces a legitimate, road legal vehicle at the end.

I don't think it ruins the thread to be clear about the legalities of what we do in our hobbies. Put simply, if you take a used chassis from another vehicle to replace the chassis of your own car, regardless of how much you alter or modify that chassis to fit, you lose the right to the identity of your own vehicle. Its the RULZ! The OP has replaced the chassis with a used one from another vehicle, simples.....

Another point worth bearing in mind. If the OP decides to follow some of the terrible advice given upthread and masquerade his 90 under the i.d of the original 90 (sure, even weld in the chassis number, coz that can't be illegal!?!?!) then how grateful for that advice will he be if/when the product of all his hard work is seized and crushed with no recompense?

I think you made your point already old skool, no need to perpetuate it. Let's keep the thread on topic.
If you'd like to educate the greater audience, write a definitive post on the subject and see if Martin will make it sticky rather than butting in on someone's thread and making disparaging comments.

Without wishing to bang on about legalities, it should be remembered that you are legally required to notify any change to a vehicle's wheelbase, even if you stretch or shorten the original chassis. Many people seem to be unaware of this.

I wouldn't dream of telling the OP what he should and shouldn't do, but some comments about legalities on a forum such as this are relevant since they may answer questions or inform readers. I would however recommend that no-one announces their intentions on a public forum, especially if considering something nefarious, since it is asking for trouble.

Is it illegal to replace the rear cross member?
Is it illegal to replace the rear quarter chassis?
Is it illegal to replace most of the chassis except the front right chassis leg?

If any of the above questions is yes, where is that line that changes the answer from no to yes? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

No, no and no, in that order, provided that you use new equivalent parts and the chassis is essentially unaltered afterwards. If you use parts taken off another vehicle the situation becomes very obfusc, and if the chassis is substantially different afterwards (for example, the wheelbase is altered) you are required to notify.

Already been said but going to repeat as it doesn't seem to have sunk in...

Jim knows what he's doing & will do what's necessary re the dvla, now please stop honking about it & let him get on & post about what we're all interested in & that's his rebuild!
