No firm FACTUAL info from anyone,....amazing "Secret keeping" by JLR!
Like some, I wish there wasn't going to be another Defender,...but there will be.
I know NOTHING at all, but IMHO, we will all know what the "New" Defender will comprise in 2018....now I know that's not being very specific at all, but without anything FACTUAL FROM JLR, it's the best I can do!

With the greatest respect, a statement like that on its' own means nothing. A bit of context would be helpful to explain how you can be so certain. Do you perhaps work for JLR or is it just a tale from a mate of a mate who does? Do you deliver the sandwiches and have seen them your own eyes? Or is it just a strongly held belief that Land Rover will deliver? Darren

When my son and I were at Solihull in February for the Reborn Tour the guy who was conducting the tour mentioned that the new Defender was on site but well out of sight.

I believe that would be the case, as I believe JLR know exactly what the new Defender will be, but NO-ONE else does.

On the assumption it is actually released next year as suggested, then it must be at or very close to road testing! Whistle Shocked Confused James

I reckon that it is already on the road being tested, but no-one's noticed because it looks exactly like all the other Landrover products that are now available.

One thing that I do think is a certainty is that the new Defender won't actually be a "Defender", ie a proper working truck that can be hosed out, cross the Darien Gap, or mount cherry pickers and equipment for killing locusts. It will be another high-priced, technology-stuffed, 'infotainment'-rich SUV aimed more at the yuppie market. It will probably be very competent off-road, but most will never get there.

And I will be delighted if I am wrong with this prediction!

Well LR only really have 3 platforms....

RR/RRS/D5 all alloy platform

D4 platform (obsolete)

DS/Ewok platform

Not really a need to test any of them as they are all used in other vehicles just stick a new body on....

Whilst on a recent Experience day, arriving early I was chatting to an engineer that was working on something RR shaped under a cover (all I saw was a yellow triangular sticker, with a lightning symbol).

A nice chap that had been with LR since he left school commented on my Defender and how much he loved driving them, even having one of the last as his 'work' vehicle.

When asked about the new one, he admitted that he didn't know much about it other than he doubted it would be on the road before 2020. Now whether this was based on something concrete, something he read on here or he has a crystal ball, I don't know. But thought I would share.

All the spy shots out there are the Velar, 2018 FFRR and possible RRS coupe. Unless they are using the RR/RRS/D5 platform to test the new Defender drivetrain, then it hasn't broken cover in public yet.

I'm sure there's a interview with Gerry McGovern, the lead designer at LR, from earlier in the year, on the net somewhere and he said that it was undergoing tests now, it's out and about and is a very capable machine and he had driven it himself and loved it. It might have been on auto car or something, although I can't find it now Confused

A couple of links pointing to it nearing completion from both top JLR boss Ralph Speth and McGovern:

Well it depends what do you understand under competent off-road. If it is the ramp angle, departure angle, approach angle, body clearance, terrain control etc. ... well, maybe. My personal feeling is, that all this data may seem impressive if you want to show off in the bling ski resort up there, but a vehicle based on the new disco platform, will in my opinion never be off-road competent. Why? Don't forget that you will hit that hidden rock and your underbody will suffer badly. You will also slide sideways in mud and ruin your expensive doors, not to mention all the lamps that will then tell you that your smashed door is open Rolling with laughter I wont even think about the plastic bumpers. Again, in my opinion this type of vehicles will never be capable off-road...or they may be capable, but only once, until they hit the first obstacle and suffer irreparable damage. Then just call the hotline Mr. Green
Lets look at the competitors: wrangler (body on frame, solid axles), Hilux (body on frame, rear solid axle), G-Class (still body on frame, rear solid axle). Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR
Jeep Wrangler YJ 1990 4.0. Front 78' Dana 60, Rear CUCV 14 bolt
