DIY window security grilles

Has anyone made their own successfully? Am wanting to put security grilles over the rear windows - actually, it's more to allow the windows in the rerouted to be open whilst the dogs are in there!

Thinking of using stainless or galvanised square mesh grille, and finishing the edges with u shaped plastic edging strip, then screwing to to the inside. Anyone done similar? Also considering plasti-dipping at least the edges.....
