Electric Windows
Hello all,

It's been a while. Big Cry

Have a non-functioning electric window, driver's side, so before I rip the beast apart with my inherent lack of knowledge, can a kind electrics expert point me in the right direction, as to what to check, how and in what order?

Two specific questions come to mind; the first, are there two separate fuses or does one working window and one faulty indicate a switch/wiring/motor problem in the culprit?

Second, if after all checks it turns out to be the motor/solenoid, can this on its own be replaced or is it a whole new kit that has to be bought and fitted?

Will soon be insulating the Def throughout, so I'd be keen to know what the fault is and whether I need a new kit, so that I can tackle the work at the same time.

Thoughts/advice welcomed....

Thanks as ever Defender Fans... Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Check the simple things first. The wires that link the door to the body have a habit of breaking - pull back the rubber sleeve and take a look. Darren

As above, probably wires in rubber trunking between door and post. Ray

Thank you both. Did think doors first. Assuming it is, I would guess a full wire replacement would be advised over connecting two ends together? I think I'm right in saying the gauge of wire is too thin? But is this a complicated task? As mentioned, I will be doing a full 'dash off' soundproofing. Monsieur Le Grenadier

It depends on how much work you're prepared to do. Joining the ends and heat shrinking the joint would be the usual repair. If you want to replace the entire door loom (it's not worth trying to just do the broken wire) then removing the dash won't help. The loom passes up the door pillar and comes out in the engine bay, tight up in the corner where the rear of the wing meets the bulkhead. It can be a bit of a sod to get to. Darren

You wont have to replace the loom ! There should be connection blocks inside the bulkhead where the rubber tubes go from the door to bulkhead.
But if it the wire has snapped just solder and heat shrink.

Finally got round to having a look, (the temps warmed up a bit and need to open the window!!), and I have a question. There are fives wires going to the door from the bulk head. Two thicker wires (red and blue) and three slimmer wires. Any idea why there are five and whih relate to what? I am wondering if the B&R relate to central locking which the Stealer claim I don't have, yet which my fob makes me wonder otherwise? Shocked As a POI, the blue and red were completely frayed and I have stiched them back together but the wondow still deosn't work. Any thoughts before I dig further? Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

The driver's door loom is as follows:

Red - window lift +, drop -
Blue - window lift -, drop +
Orange - central locking motor
Pink - central locking motor
Black - ground supply for below
Yellow with Pink - key rotation trigger for central locking - to alarm unit  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Martin, legendary advice as always, thank you. Bow down

So it seems the stealer might have been talking BS if there are extra wires and the doors don't all lock/un-lock, even with the key in the barrel?

Also, if the blue/red wires have been stitched back together and it still deosn't work, might the failure have caused a fuse to blow? Window went from working to not working overnight. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Quite possibly it has blown the fuse - check fuses 34 and 35 (20 Amps).

They should be the right ones, might be worth double-checking on the fuse panel sticker or handbook as LHD may be different to my RHD diagrams.

It might be that you have elec windows but no central locking, but there is only one loom available in the factory to cover the three options (windows only, locking only, both).

Only way to be sure would be to pop off the door card and see if you have the solenoid fitted.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks again Martin. I have a RHD actually, so should match your advice. Also, I shall be stripping the beats next weekend to do full sound insulation so can fully check wiring. I happened to have bought a Central Locking kit and alarm, was just waiting until the strip down to fit. But shall look at the fuse this weekend for starters. Cheers Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier
