Strange brake issue with 02' Defender TD5 hard top
I have a weird issue with the Brakes on my 2002 TD5 Defender which were working well until recently, pedal then went all the way to the floor before any braking applied, no leaks, pipes / hoses ok, no loss of fluid at master cylinder, bled brakes and everything was fine for a while then same happened again, I changed out the master cylinder, bled the brakes and every thing was ok again, now the same thing has happened again, pedal goes almost all the way to the floor before brakes are applied, still no leaks or loss of fluid, does anyone have any ideas about a potential cause?

try pumping brake pedal with engine running and see if problem stop next
re bleeding brake may be air in system still
start with rear passenger side

Wheelbearing play can also cause a deeper brake pedal after a longer drive without braking. Roel

Your servo working?

Test by car off, foot hard on the brake, start car. If it depresses then it works.

The servo can also crack where the master fits causing it to draw in air!

Thanks for the suggestions, With engine off the brake pedal goes almost all the way in before brakes are applied, starting the engine at that point makes no difference to the pedal, no sign of a crack around the master cylinder, (I thought that would make the pedal go solid) bearings are ok,
I will try pressure bleeding tomorrow, Just in case,

The TD5 master cylinder has 3 pipes coming out of it, two front port pipes lead to the front calipers and the rear pipe leads to the back axle where it splits to supply the rear calipers
The rear brake pipe connection at the master cylinder holds pressure when the brake is applied but seems to allow air back into the master cylinder when the brake pedal is released, so everything works ok after bleeding but the master cylinder soon ends up with air in it again, that is my theory anyway, (air is always at the master cylinder, never down at the wheels!) I will change the pipe out to confirm, has anyone heard of a brake pipe union only leaking in one direction??
