2.4 "clacking"!
I have a 2.4 TDCi in my 2011 110 defender... I have owned it a couple of years or so now and already had a MAF sensor, MAP sensor, SCV, PRV, blanked EGR and a remap. It was running sweet until a few weeks ago when it started making a "clacking" noise. Only does it when driving, nothing when sat still at any revs.
It burns no oil, starts on the button and when cold from overnight produces a small amount of blueish white smoke for about a minute. When it's cold it sounds fine, a few minutes after it's up to temperature it starts to make a clacking noise when at neutral revs. If you accelerate hard it sounds better and off the throttle it sounds fine but in traffic or just holding a moderate speed it sounds like a tractor! The longer you drive the worse it sounds. Even after a reasonable time cooling down it still sounds bad, it gets so bad that people turn and look to see what's coming.
I have had the cover off and the injectors are tight but look slightly moist around the seal at the base, I can't say wet, but definitely not dry.
One garage just said "they all sound like that", the other said " it could be the injectors but don't want to mess with them".
I'm very frustrated as I know how it used to sound but it doesn't now! It still runs well but generally sounds a little noisier than normal even when it's not "clacking".
It doesn't seem to be giving the normal symptoms of failing injectors or seals, there is no chuffing sound or gasses from rocker cover. I have got it booked into an injector specialist early next week just to rule them out but it's getting louder and I think it might fail before then! What do failing big or little ends sounds like or camshaft, or oil pump?

I'm beginning to think I will have to let it break to find out the cause! Big Cry

Any pointers gladly accepted.

Have you tried the old trick of putting a screw driver on various components and listening to the end of it? (automotive stethoscopes are cheap too) If it is a vac pump of something then that will help you pin point it.

Does it go quiet when you depress the clutch pedal?

It doesn't do it when sat still. only when driving. No difference with clutch in or out Neutral

Ahh ok, that kind of suggests it's a problem in the drive train rather than engine related.

No, definitely in the engine somewhere, it only happens under load and at certain revs.

I've got the ashcroft upgrade, fitted with new clutch in 2015.
I've got a wav file that you can just about hear it on, cant figure how to add it here but it's in my gallery.

No, that would make a noise when moving with or with out engine. Have a listen to the wav, it's fairly obvious if you listen a couple of times and filter out the normal Defender din!

You wouldn't say that if you were driving it! People in the street are turning round to see what's making so much noise Whistle
