Sadly the days of NOS parts are nearly at an end, especially the very early stuff.
It's either been found and sold on, or the time sensitive parts (rubber seals etc) have all but withered away! Although saying that, it's still surprising what's out there if you look hard enough, NOS 1600 engine block on EBay right now! never thought one of them would turn up? Seized 1600s are still fetching a premium and would still cost around 5k to get them back to health 
It's got to the stage for me, where my collection of good spares and spare engines actually equates to a small gold mine! So then it makes you think do you keep it, or cash in? Everyone says it's going to dip soon? but the demand for parts seems to be ever increasing? I was selling at Newbury, and had a few 80" parts, not much, and most of it was left over from previous restorations, people were going nuts for it! And not bothering to haggle either! A lot of it sold before it even got out of the van. Some people seemed quite desperate. It was all sold at enthusiast prices, as I would rather help someone get their old series back on the road, I've been in that situation and people selling were good to me, so I'm happy to return the favour. Another factor is now Land Rover are building series 1s many of the specialist part suppliers, especially panels (which there was only one chap doing this, Keith Wadsworth) have now had to keep up with demand from them, so joe public are having to wait a few years now for wings etc.. It is a sad fact that early 1s are now big money to restore and own, But slowly all the others will go along the same route. I brought a series 3 while they are still relatively cheap, as one day they will be unobtainable too, it may seem the country is littered with them, but give it another 10 years....  80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

I couldn't agree more, defender9.
Been a member of the Series One Club since 1980 and still am, but I am so unhappy with the way things have gone that I don't go on their forum any more, or participate in activities. The Series Two Club is better, in my opinion. However, early coilers are now my thing. Hardly ever drive my 4 Series Ones any more....... |

I might not be as senior as some  but i have been crazy about Land Rovers since i was 13 and will have owned One of my S1's for 20 years in a couple months....
I used read old LRO magazines cover to cover 50 times a month but now would read any of the magazines within 3 minutes. Now I'm finding less instreast now Utility Land Rovers were deemed fashionable (thus expensive) and likewise to Slidey Windows drive my 2 Series maybe a handful times a year. I have noted prices are residing a little but not sure about where it will all end!! Andy Working towards Carry on camping! |

We have just had an engine re built and the engineer told us he now has a 2 year waiting list as he has won the contract for Land Rover re building the engines for the company. A real specialist working in not much more than a large shed. From the line up of engines waiting to be re built Land Rover don't expect the bubble to burst any time soon!

The 80" are pretty horrible to actually drive, both of ours are 88"

I think it's more of an 80" drives itself, you mearly point it in the direction you think it should go!
You just have to get use to 1940/50 driving style. Saying that, the one I've just done drives lovely, recon box, everything else rebuilt or new, feels nice and responsive, and light on the steering and holds it's line very well. The 86" is a joy to drive with the later steering box. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

It's not just the series motors that have been ridiculously priced recently but the whole stable right through to 2.2 Puma. I have a 1989 V8 currently being refurbished and it has taken 18 months to find parts at a price I am prepared to pay and I have seen some rubbish in that 18 months that has sold
I do think the later models are coming off their top prices and will subside a little now but the early models up to series 3 are only going to go one way. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response |
