I find reversing up near walls very easy, figuring out the relative heights of crossmember/towbar against other vehicles is much harder to judge! With the slider and tow hitch on mine sits out a good 75mm from the crossmember.

Plan to fit a camera at some point, rather than sensors though.

Park Assist set up taken off a Discovery 2 and fitted into a modified rear step .
No issues as yet with fitting the sensors into a metal housing but the sensors do have a plastic casing.

Other than perhaps with cheap kits the cutter they supply isn't able to drill metal, i can't see why you couldn't fit them in metal.

The circle you see on the sensors is the plastic/foam insulator, the middle bit is the actual echo sounder. The outer bit is literally just there to hold it in the hole.
