In a previous life used to run expeds for a charity involving canoeing & bushcraft etc...we always used Frost/Mora knives, they are brilliant & are great value, my advice would be to avoid spending shed loads of brass on fancy named knives that are style over substance.

What do you want to do with it?
How much do you want to spend?
How quick do you want it?

I have one knife on order & l have been quoted 2 years & the chap who designed it works for me!

I've had lots of different bushcraft knives (also a past in bushcraft). Ben Orford, Fallkniven and a couple of custom made jobbies based on various blade styles. I've paid lots of money (hundreds) to not a lot of money (pounds). How much you spend sometimes (subconsciously) affects how you treat the knife. If you have paid a couple of hundred quid on a custom knife, do you want to start whacking it with lumps of wood? Using it to prepare game? Generally use and abuse it? Of all the knives I own and have owned, I generally always go for a cheap old mora as my go-to knife! Finding a good all rounder is difficult (sometimes expensive) and you have to make compromises somewhere. The other option is a selection of knives designed for their specific purposes.

Anyhooo, I digress.

You have to ask yourself a few questions before you can decide;

First and foremost is intended Function (which will partway dictate the following), blade style/material, handle design/material, sheath and/or carrying options. Cost comes in at a point but where is up to you.

As above, you can't really beat a Mora knife for simple value/basic quality... it's what I recommend to my students.

That said, and as above, it boils down to what your main use will be. For hunting I use one knife, for general bushcraft another, I never use my hunting knife for general bushcraft but do the other way.

Get yourself a good sharpening kit whatever you do, more people are cut with a blunt knife than a sharp one. I'd recommend a Lanksy kit.

suggest check out pawn shops and Army surplus. I use a bayonet/mini-sword (Swedish steel) for chopping and a belt knife for general purpose. Any German or Swiss steel...and some English are good. Save tons of cash if u shop used.

For a serious hand made knife I can't recommend Roger Harrington enough. His company is Bison Bushcraft and he is a true craftsman.

I use them for everything - recommend the stainless ones over the carbon ones for versatility...
