Stopped at my local motor factors on way home yesterday for some Lacquer (doing some wheels up)
Noticed this http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/streetwize-veh...acker.html Pop sim car in, use on Battery (only 36 hrs) or hard wire. Now you can get them for £30 ish What do people think? gut seemed to think you can set a Geofence area also. How often, how much for pay as you go? Sorry, I'm not much into this kind of thing. |

Stick a P.A.Y.G. SIM card in, add £10 credit and it will last ages.
The only charge is the cost of a text when you ring it and it's send the text with Google Maps link back to you. One tip, make sure you can top-up online, this will save you having to remove the sim from the tracker and putting it into a phone just to top-up. |

I have an O2 in one and an Orange in the other.
Both are easy to top-up online. |

How long does the unit last on the battery back up device you use, my plan was to use it this was with a phone backup charger. It seems to me if I hard wired it to the battery it would be easy to follow the leads to the unit? |

The battery I use is indeed one that you can charge your phone with, that and the internal battery both fully charged last two to three weeks.
The wired one is not wired from the battery, it's a live feed from a non ignition controlled source with its own inline fuse. I did get this bit done by my local Land Rover main dealer. |

Given the vagaries of the various networks and the fact that it's nice to be able to drive off the beaten track away from major centres of population if I was to have a tracker of this type I'd want it to be able to use whichever mobile network was available. An "all network" SIM offers this - something like this: https://anywheresim.com/

It depends how you use it, if you just use it to get a location very occasionally then something like the anywhere sim is fine but bear in mind the costs can soon mount up if you use it for anything else.
As an example, if you park it at work every day and want to use the stockade and shock alarms, it will cost you 2 texts per day to arm it and 2 texts to disarm it. If you have more than one phone set up to work with it then those figures are multiplied by the number of phones. We have 2 phones hooked up to our cheap trackers and, as a result, every time there is a "shock" report or "stockade" alert it sends out 2 texts. Forget to turn off the stockade and start driving home and it'll send you texts all the way home, one every 30 seconds or so depending on the unit. The anywhere sim, above costs 5p per text... imagine how much it will cost you if you forget to turn off the stockade and drive home ! When we were using ours daily, with the vehicle it was attached to being used for commuting and general pottering about, it was rare we spent less than £10 per month on the PAYG sim. It worked out cheaper to put it on a contract with unlimited SMS. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

I think the anywhere sim is good but it will cost a minimum of £10 per month. I just use ordinary sims and don't have any stockade, etc set up so use very little, in fact all I've spent up to now is just to check the battery levels and make sure they are working.
My defender is usually sat under two high definition CCTV cameras that have movement detection that alerts me when anything goes near my house so I can remotely check with my IPad |
