Total loss of drive.....ah well
Well it happened at 5am this morning, on the way to work. Cruising along in 6th at 100kph on the Western Hwy near Melbourne
No warning, just a slight crunch then whirring noise. Came to a stop in the hard shoulder. Could select gears, but every time I let out the clutch no drive.

It's now been towed to Melbourne City Land Rover, who will probably get to look at it by Friday.

Initial thoughts were the output shaft, but last August I had Les Richmond, an indie, put the Ashcrofts kit in. The old shaft was pretty flogged and bone dry. Just called Les Richmond, but they're still on Holidays till the 16th Jan.

It'll be interesting to see what caused the total loss of drive, hopefully I'll know by end of business this week. The cars my daily drive, so the sooner the better. Could be many things I suppose, I was just lucky that it didn't happen whilst I was away camping in the Victorian High Country with the kids over the Christmas break.

I do all the servicing and general repairs myself, but when it involves dropping either the gearbox or TC, I just don't have the room or time do it on my own. Especially now we have friends over for a month or so, and the driveway is chockers.

This is actually the first time any of my Landy's have let me down, in 30 odd years of ownership, so not too bad going then. Hopefully I'll have more of an update by the end of the week.

When I dropped off the Defender, the service manager said over the past week they've had a least 4 tow ins a day, I guess it's that time of year. Short staffed, and a little snowed under, ah well fingers crossed.

Quick update, just had call from MCLR, they've already put it on the hoist, just in the off chance that it would be "a quick fix to get me back on the road". Not bad when they said they couldn't get to it till Friday.

Unfortunately the transfer case has to come off, head technician says that it's highly likely from the noises made and past experience, that the output shaft has failed.

Not sure, especially this time of year. I purchased my kit through Les Richmond, they fit a lot of Ashcroft gear here in Melbourne.

Most parts I order from the UK take 1-2 weeks, sometimes quicker than local post.

But i do hear from others who have purchased Ashcroft's products, that they're postage is pretty swift

I gave the vehicle a good going over before our trip, rears have HD Hi Tuff Engineering axles and flanges, used to be Maxi Drive. Fronts are standard. There was no play in either when I removed the caps to grease.

Sorry to hear about your woes, but out of interest how many kms since your Ashcroft kit was installed. Thinking of having the Ashcroft kit installed in mine once out of warranty. 1955 Series 1 107" Pick up.

The kit was installed August 2016, and I've done just over 7000Km's since. I also have not heard of it failing, it would be unusual for it to totally let go after such a short period of time. Especially after seeing the old shaft that came out of the vehicle, it was bone dry and worn but still usable......just, after 80,000km's of use and no lube from factory.

Still counting my lucky stars that it didn't happen whilst in the Avon Wilderness, with the kids. We didn't see another 4wd in 6-7 days.

I have sent Ashcrofts a quick email, and Dave said to keep him updated. If I had a choice it would go back to the original installer, but they don't open till the 16th. So dealer prices it is then.... Shocked Shocked

Cannot believe an Ashcroft shaft would fail in such a short time & mileage Sad

I wonder if the LR garage are going for obvious normal fail point rather than looking at it properly Question

Only time will tell & hope its fixed quickly for you 2020 P300 HSE

Did you try driving it on diff lock at all, that would have helped diagnose whether it was axle/diff related or transfer box.

I assume from the comments above that it has been established (by locking the centre diff) that it is not an axle fault.

It seems exceptionally unlikely that the Ashcroft parts could fail through fretting and wear in the mileage you have done (I suppose if there was no oil in the main gearbox the shaft wouldn't get lubricated, but I suspect that the gearbox would fail before the shaft).

It is I suppose possible that the Aschroft shaft had an internal metallurgical defect since manufacture and has failed. It will be apparent as soon as the transfer box is off, though. Mainshaft failure in the main gearbox would seem to be another possibility.

Please let us know what you find.

Sorry to hear of your plight.

I also had the original shaft swapped out at 80000 kms and replaced it with the Ashcroft one only a month ago. The original shaft was dry, worn and rusty but still functioning. Waiting to see what the diagnosis is. Could also be a halfshaft, flange, an installation fault on the Ashcroft, or a material fault on the original piece supplied to them.

As blackwolf said, the first thing I tried when pulled over in the hard shoulder was locking the centre diff.

As soon as I know more, I will post, I was also thinking of mainshaft failure, but i guess its all speculation at the moment.
