That's not a factory switch so could be anything that the previous decided to fit. Best bet is to trace the wires from it and see where they go. Ray

does switching it on and off do anything? Can you get at the wiring behind the dash? If you have those DIN removal tools you could take the radio out and maybe you'll see something. (or can you remove the front fascia on the 2004?)

Thanks for your response. Doesn't seem to do anything.at first I thought it was something to do with alarm or towing electrics. I have seen another parked up defender with same switch in same place.
I have asked the garage I bought from to contact previous owner to try and solve the mystery |

Similar type switch to that used on Exmoor Trim heated seat pads so maybe that.
Only other thing I can think of is on/off switch for driving lights. Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

It's the small red light switch!
Has the vehicle ever had a winch fitted? I've seen similar switches used to energise a solenoid to power a winch. |

Can't see any evidence of winch or driving lights being previously fitted. If the garage I bought from can't find out from previous owner I will go down the tracing the wires investigation.

Does the vehicle start with the switch in both positions? Just wondered if it isolated the ignition / fuel pump or similar as a layer of security.

It looks like the same type of switch supplied with the GKN overdrive except that they normally come mounted on a replacement gear knob, try flicking the switch when doing over 30mph.
Otherwise as said before, could be anything, you would need to trace the wires back to see where it goes. |

Nope. Definitely after market and the only thing to do is pull it out and trace the wires... Great job for a quiet hour this weekend...
