Roof Replacement
About to replace the roof on my 90. Just wondering if anyone knows if it's a good idea to put a line of silicon around all the joints, or does it seal by itself pretty well. Any other tips on replacing it would be really helpful
Cheers
George

No need for any sealant as the rubber/sponge roof seal does a pretty good job.

Easy enough to take off and put back a roof though the more hand help you have the better, I have always found the best way is to lift it up from the back and pivot the roof on the front window frame then just lift of.

Helps if you have a long reach 10 mm and 13mm socket to take off all the bolts. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

If you really must use a sealant, use an automotive seam sealer, not silicone. If you use silicone and you ever need to repaint the area around it, then it will be a total nightmare.

Just an edit you will also need a 10mm socket for all the M6 bolts as well. As a rough count I think there are about 36 of the M6 roof fixing bolts For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Slight hijack of thread, if the roof was being resprayed the original colour, would it be ok left on and just replace with new alpine seals? plus if it was being painted another colour would the roof then need to come off?
Paul. Cogito ergo sum

I am not too sure roof removal is a job for one person! The roof is quite heavy though it is not so much the weight just the size of the thing that would make it awkward for one person plus the front of the roof goes into a lipped seal that really needs the roof to be jiggled about a bit to get out of the seal particularly if the seal is old.

I would recommend two people minimum to take a roof off and definitely two people to put the roof back on.
I suppose it could be possible for one person lifting it up from inside slowly, then going outside and slowly sliding it off, but the risk of damage will always be there in a single persons operation especially putting the roof back on.. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Provided you masked up well then I would not see a problem with spraying the roof a different colour with the roof left in situ.
Alpine seals can be a sod to replace so make sure you buy the special tool, and use plenty of washing up liquid on the seal when replacing For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..
