Rear Bumperette/step Whitbread

I have Terrafirma rear bumperettes fitted to provide a little protection to the rear. I've had them on nearly a year (bought second hand but new condition), but they are now really rusting and powder coat all but gone in places. I also find the 'side' protection just catches dirt and mud and isn't easy to clean behind. I will also be fitting some rear Dirt-D-Fenders which I beleive will clash, the bumperettes need to go!

So I'm looking for replacement ideas. I want to keep our Dixon Bate tow hitch which rules our the NAS step. I like the Bowler rear steps, but I can't justify the cost, and read the paint doesn't also last too long. I do much prefer the 'look' of the Bowler steps.

So I'm wondering about the Whitbread rear step, as they're only £75 a pair and are galvanised and painted. Does anyone have them? Our kids will still need to use the fold down step, so wonder if the Whitbred step helps or hinders access?

Any other suggestions?

I guess it depends on what you want them to do. Whilst they solve the obvious tow bar compromise of a NAS step, they still don't provide proper corner protection.

Unfortunately, if you think you'll still need the fold down step then these also look like they'll interfere with it. How small are your kids? Perhaps these as a step will be enough? If not yet, then in my experience they seem to grow pretty quick! Darren

Or, get the rear bumperettes re-coated as they do a good job for corner protection, then get one of these Wolf/Mantec steps for rear access: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Land-Rov...Swo4pYGkwz

Hi James, I had some rear corner protectors like the terrafirma ones you have, but have since replaced them with the whitbread steps, and although I can't comment on the folding step as I broke mine long before I got these steps. I like them but I've only had them on for a few weeks now, and haven't really had chance to use them to climb in. One thing with them is that they do stick out further than say an nas step or the bowler steps, which when compared side by side Is quite noticeable, I suppose that can only help with protecting the corners of the crossmember, but not the tub.
If you do keep the terrafirma bumperettes it's possible to use the dirt defenders with them, you'll just have to cut a little notch out of them, that's what I did, and they still work properly

BuckBlu - thank you, do you have any decent photos?

I think any sort of step is going to hinder access to much for the kids. Possible sort out what I've got or go without anything for easy maintenance. I did see some that had a box section go under the rear corner sill/side but can't find them now.

I have the whitbread steps but have not fitted them yet so not sure on the small step clearance but can say they are sold built and good value the finish is good but there are some galv lumps and bumps present under the powder coat in places. Need to repaint the rear cross member before fitting as they make it look poor in finish

As above. I too have a set waiting to go on. What I can say is that they are not compatible with some swing-away wheel carriers (in particular the safari equip one I have - bolt fouls the step) and also some rear access ladders too.

Super solid bits of kit though and will allow me to retain the 2" receiver hitch I have on there too

Which safari equip wheel carrier do you have is it the single fixing one as I have been thinking about which carrier to use with them. Ideally don't won't to drill body work.

NO it is the three point item that opens with the door and has the hi-lift mount. You can see that the bottom hinge mount ends just above the mounting holes for the rear step and the bolt/nut gets in the way. The solution will be either, source a new carrier or more than likely drill out a hole for the bolt/nut to slot in to.

Well I finally fitted the rear steps and as suggested I drilled the right hand step to fit with the safari equip rear wheel carrier. I think it looks pretty darned good.mthouht you'd like to see it as well.
