The grey plug for the tow socket is usually behind the plastic protective cover underneath the drivers side rear wheel arch. It's above the cross member and basically behind the panel where the lights are bolted. Ray

Hi guys, at last the rain eased for a few hours which gave me the chance to have another look at the weird light problem, eventally after much swearing I found the grey trailer harness connection under a plastic flap at the rear of the RH wheel arch, I got it apart and it looks fine, before refitting it I gave it a good clean then I tried the indicator, lights etc without it connected and still have the same problems, so recconnected the grey plug and booked it in on Friday with an auto electrician.

From what I see currently I can exclude the trailer harness up to the grey plug, the fault must be somewhere from the trailer spur/ main harness join or further back? my own suspicions are that somewhere the harness has been in contact with the chassis and has possibly rubbed through bringing the lights, brakes, indicators cables all in contact with each other at that point, being 70 years old I cannot face crawling under the vehicle anymore to trace the harness so my lovely girl is off to a specialist electrician.

Will let you all know the outcome as soon as Its solved. And thank you all so much for all the help and suggestions re this problem.

Regards

Ole Dave

You're right, you've eliminated the trailer socket as the cause.

It is still classic symptoms of a bad (ie loose or dirty) earth connection, it's unlikely to be a chaffed wire.

Hi zsdpuma, I hope your correct as if it is it should be an easy fix for an auto electrician, sadly with my age and athritic condition I can no longer crawl underneath it to check all the earth straps so have to depend on others now, the problem has stupidly put all our plans in the air and me completly out of sync until its sorted, we were looking forward to getting away with the caravan soon so I hope the news is good news on Friday morning after they have had a look at it, when I worked in a garage in South Wales they used a local company, Andrew the owner is a whizz with electrics so I am comforted by the fact he will be involved. Will let you all know the outcome and the reason for the problem.

Regards

Hi Guys, well collected my lovely Landy this afternoon from the auto electrician guys and all working, the problem was as quite a few of you mentioned that being an earth problem, but it was a specific earth problem relating only to the rear section of the vehicle which is for all the lights and hitch connections, not being Defender specialists they decided rather than spend hours looking for that specific location they would run another new earth which cured the fault.

My question to you all is, does anybody know where that specific earth point is as I would like to root around and repair it, their guess is that it has corroded and possibly snapped? would be very happy if someone knows exactly where it is and can point it out to me, my suspicion is its up under the RH wheel arch behind possibly the plastic flap but I am only guessing?

Regards to all

Many Thanks

Ole Dave

Note: this is for the 1999 TD5, but I guess it could very well be the same for the Puma. Cheers, Vincent

I would guess most of them are the same.

RH rear wheel arch would be my first port of call on that list.

Going by the pic it's probably on the inside of the chassis rail.
