Ferrite Rings
I've managed to finally get hold of some ferrite rings to hopefully solve the HID's interfering with the radio reception.
So should the rings go on the power supply at the ballast or where the power supply runs close to the aerial cable?
Presume, that it will end up being a 'trail by error' operation...

The closer to the source the better; hence any piece of wire will radiate the interfering signal(s).
Doen't hurt to wrap those ferrite rings with some electricians tape to protect them from moisture, some ferrite materials tend to rust after some time when exposed to the elements. Peter,

The rings need to go as close as possible to the source of the high frequency switching, IE the ballast, this is to absorb the high frequency content and prevent the wires leading into it from acting as an antenna which radiates the interference.

And if possible both + and - wire should pass the same one ring. This is to supress the DC current passing through the wires. This current can saturate the ferrite ring, and it will not working correctly to supress the interference.
Standard ferrite ring works good around 100MHz (+-), for much lower frequencies you need a proper filter, fur much higher some additional shielding on cables works better. If you need all frequencies, you hat to combine more types of filtering. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂ­nek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

My LED head lights interfered with FM radio, fitted DAB radio solved the problem

The rings finally arrived in the mail... but are now not needed Rolling Eyes
While waiting I replaced the aerial and removed all the quick splice connectors (used by the dealer who fitted the spots) with solder & shrink wrap.

A poor earth connection at the aerial end will often result in massive intereference. My LED lightnar rendered the radio unusuable until I cleaned up the connecteion between the aerial and the wing.
