Depends on what you want out of it really!

First thing is you have the older ECU so either has to be swapped for a new one or have a chip soldered on.

Hope that helps!

Does anyone have a guide as to how to solder on the chip? 1999 Defender 110

Send it to an expert!

I believe it's a bga or tqfp type package. Somewhere near impossible to do at home! And actually, soldering the new chip would be far easier than trying to desolder the old chip without destroying anything

hmm...

I wonder if the best option would be to buy a new ecu and get it chipped and then mailed to me... 1999 Defender 110

In the older type TD5 engine ECU - marked MSBxxxxxx the memory chip is in PLCC package. You need some proper tools for desoldering the old chip, and soldering back new chip or socket. I have done it few times - it is not hard, when you are experienced with soldering. Many times I was repairing damaged ECUs, when someone tried these soldering, and was not really good in it.
One small problem is, that original memory chip and whole board, is covered with some thick protective coating, and it works like a glue, between chip and board. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Probably it is but it is still not plug and play.

The injector codes have to be programmed. (can be done by the tuner if you tell them the codes)
The AS10 (alarm ecu) has to learned to the Engine ECU. But you could buy one from the tuner too and let them be programmed. However if you have remote keyfob then they have to be learned again too.

But some tuners like Bell can make the ecu not looking for the AS10 anymore. So all your build in security is switched off but the ECU will be plug and play.

But if you go for the standard tune, not specially made for your specific td5, why don't you go for a good tuning box what is plug and play. Like the PSI powerbox I use. Roel
