2004 Defender 110 2.5 TD CSW Baltic Blue

TD5 front diff - play in drive flange

I'm fairly new to landrover ownership and it looks like I'm about to dive into my first mechanical repairs on one too.

I've had a rattle develop over the last month or so, I suspected a universal joint bearing as the rattle was not as evident when under throttle, but worse went the throttle was off.
I inspected the underside tonight and found some play in the front diff drive flange, where it connects to the front prop shaft universal joint.
Can anyone tell me if there is a bearing replacement kit for this and how difficult it is to replace? I've not worked on a defender diff before, only changed out universal joint bearings etc.
Also is this a known spot for a ticking type rattle or have I just found something else to fix!

Its a 110 CSW 2004 spec..

By chance is the ticking worse at full lock L or R??

Thanks. It does seem worse on left hand tight bends

Ok. So possibly the diff flange or one of the CV Joints.

Check whether the noise is coming from the left or right hand side by finding a quiet car park and driving around a friend. First one way then the other. They should listen for which side has the louder clicking or rattling.

Following on from JSTs suggestion...

Next thing to do is wheels straight ahead (this removes the CV joint from the equation), jack the front wheels up in turn, sit down on the ground with your legs left and right of the wheel. What you are looking for is play or wear in the wheel bearings.

First, rotate the wheel and listen for clicking or rumbling, does the wheel rotate smoothly? A good wheel will rotate smoothly with some resistance. It should not feel harsh or like ball bearings being run over a washboard under your hand. Dry and rumbly. If this is the case then your bearings need replacing. Best to do both wheels at the same time.

Second, grab the top and bottom of the wheel and try to rock it towards and away from the chassis. Listen for a "duh duh" sound, might be only slight, but the wheel shouldn't rock very much in this plain if at all. If it does rock but the first test was good then your bearings need adjusting and possibly replacing if on inspection they are very worn.

I've finally had chance to get under the defender and run through all the checks you have suggested.

There is a small amount of play at the back of the front diff, where the prop shaft connects. The is no play in the prop shaft, wheels, bearings or anywhere else I can find. I can replicate the noise I hear when driving by shaking the front of the prop shaft.

Is it easy enough to change the drive flange with the diff on the axle or am I going to have to strip the whole diff down?

Think I need to find a workshop manual!
