Squeak when taking foot off accelerator - EGR valve?
Hi,

My 2008 Puma has just started making a squeaking noise when I take my foot off the accelerator. Seems to start once the engine is warm. Doesn't seem to be clutch-related and I initially thought it was a belt.

Rev the engine to 2,000 or so and then let it go back to idle and it squeaks almost every time at about 1,500 revs going back to idle. Rev again and same thing happens.

Now thinking is might be the EGR valve because the sound is very similar to the squeaking that can be heard as part of the "chukka chukka chukka" when the valve cleans on switching off the engine. Been doing it for the last 50 miles or so.

Might be a co-incidence but I put some Redex Diesel treatment in the last tank, although I have used it before and never had a problem.

So, is this feasible and if so, is it a sign the EGR valve might be on its way out?

Thanks,

Steve 2008 Defender 110

Probably EGR most likely, if anything it's probably cleaner.
It's obviously working, as the noise is it opening and closing, probably triggered by the treatment. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

Mine showed exactly the same symptoms a couple of months ago. I didn't have the necessary spare part (a round tuit, as in "I'll get a round tuit some time or other") so did nothing, and after a few days it stopped.

With a bit of luck it'll clear itself like mine.

Pretty much identical noise for a day or so last November. I was convinced it was a belt but they were ok.
Went away so forgot about it. Thinking about it now, I'd used one of those one shot treatments the day I picked it up so possibly not a coincidence.

Contrast to the Millers I put in this week and now I'd swear the engine is actually quieter (and smoother).

Thanks all, seems to be fairly unanimous. Think I'll leave it as it sounds like it's fairly normal.

I use Millers too.

It likely the treatment you've used is just doing its job.

EGR's are a pet hate if mine, glad I'm rid. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

I had the same ....Have a look here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic49367.html

My symptoms have gone away! I used an oversize slug of 2SO, and some premium BP fuel - seemed to help...anyway the problem has gone away.

One of the magazines (LRO I think) just did an article on EGR replacement... I have the article somewhere...

EDIT - LRO March 2017 Issue 3 - article on EGR replacement on Defender Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)
