Fitting a td5 discovery transferbox into my 90
Hi, I am after some help with fitting a discovery transferbox to my 90. I have just purchased an early discovery td5 t-box and I've been told its not a simple swap? Is there anything i need to beware of? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks Alex

Thanks for your reply James. Ive been told that the speedo drive has to be changed due to the different ratio etc, and that they can be a nightmare to remove. I'm unsure if I've been given false information. Is it a straight swap or are there bits that need swapping over ? Alex

Check you've bought a version with a diff lock, some discos didn't have them.

If it has got a diff lock, as far as I can remember its handbrake swap complete, hi/lo and diff lock linkage swap and then straightforward.

I did it on my tdi bitsa and was running 265/85 R16 and the speedo was spot on.

Good luck

Keith

Thanks for your help. Yea new box does have difflock. I was pretty sure it was a simple change over but I have read a couple of posts that it wasn't that simple due to the different ratio box etc. I currently have 235 85 16's . Thanks for you help 'ickle'.
Mk1collector How come you had to change the flange etc?

As above. you will have to swap this over, along with your transfer brake This is a good mod.

Disco 2 front propshaft has a larger diameter flange at the transfer box end than Defender (due to the DC joint at that end of the propshaft).

Therefore you either need to fit a (smaller) Defender flange on the transfer box, or - arguably a better solution but much more expensive - upgrade the front propshaft to a DC type.

Ok cheers guys. Do i remove the flange or the complete nose that mk1collector mentioned earlier? Ive just checked the box which im planning to put in and the serial number is 11d ? Can't find the ratio for this box? I purchased its as it was removed from a disco 2 supposedly.

Ive been reading posts on here for a long time and wished I'd registered a lot sooner. Thanks to all that has helped.

The rear output housing which holds the speedo drive isn't drilled for the speedo drive on a D2 LT230.

As such, you can't just swap the speedo drive, You actually have to swap the entire rear output housing.

Having said that it's not particularly difficult to do. 2001 90 HT 6.0LS/6spdAuto.

Thanks psimpson7 you were correct 41D is the box code. Quick rub down confirmed that. From what you guys have said its a simple job. Unbolt rear output housing and fit my existing one. Bolt back into my 90. A fiend of mine likes to over complicate things as he thinks I should leave it standard. [/quote]

the lt230 disco boxes i have fitted have all had the speedo drive on the rear housing.

i would use linkage and handbrake that you already have and change to def flanger as above. no need to change whole nose unit. Cheers
