Defender TD5 Actuator Movement
Hi all,

Just a quick question. My TD5 doesn't feel as though it's benefiting from full power. I have checked all hoses, intercooler pipes, sensors etc, EGR blank, boost box, new genuine MAF, no oil in red plug & changed loom etc.

I have noticed that the actuator rod is stiff to move, there's a YouTube video that makes it look very easy to move (although I'm not so sure that's right either). I am able to move it, but with considerable force. The brass elbow moves freely, and I have had the actuator off soaking in oil & working it several times.

My question is, when the vehicle is standing, and I rev the engine, should the actuator move at all? Because it isn't. I had a friend rev the vehicle throughout the rev range to look for movement, but it doesn't move at all. I'm not sure if it only moves when under load?

The actuator will only move when under load.

Have you got a Nanocom or similar? They can give you the boost pressure which at standard should be about 14psi.

The rod is hard to move, it should move freely but not by hand. I have to use mole grips to move mine.

Thanks for clearing that one up. I will have Nanocom/Hawkeye in due course. Seems as though it's all as it should be.

ETA: Can someone with a mapped vehicle & boost box count the threads exposed (for optimum boost) on the actuator shaft for me? I currently have 8 threads showing.

I can for you later. 18 - 19psi is about the max you can hit before the ECU senses overboost and puts it into limp mode. After than you need the boost box where you can run up to 24 - 26psi.

Best level of boost on a standard turbo is about 18psi - 20psi any higher and it starts to lag.

Can do bud. Best bet though would be to buy a decent boost gauge, remove the clock and fit there. You can either take a feed of the actuator hose or tap the EGR blank/inlet manifold.
