Can anyone explain
The half shaft went on my Landy last week, Both half shafts have gone in the last 6 months at approx. 38000/39000 miles.

When the half shaft has gone there appeared to be no drive. I was lucky as once it went at my local garage whilst I was driving it and once at home.

I thought the fact the Landy has 4 wheel drive would have meant it could still be used in say a limited mode, however there
was no drive.

Can anyone explain why that was the case?

Is 38/39000 miles around the normal for these to go?

Should I have had these changed out a set interval?

Sorry just trying to get my head round this.

You could probably have driven if you put it in diff lock.

Mine went at about 40k. Had the new ones out the other day and the ends were already rusty after 25k miles and less than 12 months old. I've put copper slip on them not sure if that's the right thing to do.

The centre diff in the tbox is open, if you snap a halfshaft you need to select diff lock, this locks the tbox diff splitting power equally front and rear. When it is open/unlocked the power/drive will travel the easiest route normaly to the snapped shaft as it just spins in the axle casing. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Technically (under extreme conditions) you normally have one wheel drive.. Without abs/traction control.
With the centre diff lock, you get 2 wheel drive.
Only with centre diff lock and 2 diff locks locked- ARB air lockers for example do you get true 4 wheel drive.

Have a look at this video, where it is very well explained and shown with different Land Rover types with different transmissions:

The answer to your question is in the first 20 minutes - this is must-know info for every Defender driver IMHO. The rest is about offroad driving. Good to know if ever you're in a tight spot, but not crucial you if tend to stick to the asfalt.

Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks I think that answers my questions.

Rather than the half shaft snapping it seems it is the splines that go either on the collar/hub or shaft at the wheel end.
Is that what the rest of you find?

The splines in the drive members do seem to wear, not helped by these being assembled dry from the factory.

This is the rear shaft on my previous Defender at 3 years old:

When you replace the shaft and/or the drive member be sure to lubricate the splines.

Landrover seem to have a problem understanding the need to provide lubrication for splines as witnessed by the growing number of gearbox adaptor shaft failures - at least the drive members are easy to check and lubricate.

Its down to the middle diff - I remember a demo at Billing years ago where a 90 had one wheel jacked up, was switched on, put into gear, and it just sat there with the jacked up wheel rotating, and going nowhere! Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Just need to take drive flanges off and lube splines with plenty of grease, think Land Rover build them up dry, half shafts wear quicker then the flang

Are Landover really doing one piece shafts again? Makes sense I suppose, one less place to go slack and fret until failure. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon.

My rear shafts were replaced with 1 piece versions a few months ago due to wear. So it seems like common practice for dealerships now 110 D250 SE HT
