Worrying knocking and juddering .... please help
Hi all
Driving to work this morning my 1989 defender started making a strange knocking and juddering when coming to a halt. The noise seems to be coming from underneath but not the engine.
She changes gear fine and pulls away without any problem.

Just does it when coming to a halt. Any ideas?

Many thanks

I would start by checking for a damaged brake pad or loose calliper, particularly if your clutch was depressed and you were braking at the time. You can check by stopping in neutral. If it judders then it would seem less likely to be transmission.

It might be worth checking the handbrake, since if this is either adjusted too tight, or if a return spring has failed, this can cause similar symptoms. TDCis are notorious for this.

It might at least be somewhere to start looking.

Thanks guys just about to have a look. Seems somewhat intermittent. It happened
once on the journey home but still it must be something amiss.

I turned the handbrake adjuster back a tad and that seems to have done the trick.
She still stays still on an incline to.
Thanks again for the help

ARRRRGHHH Thought I had fixed it.
Did it again today. Makes no difference if it is in or out of gear.
Seems to carry on for a bit even when stationary. I tried putting it back into 1st gear and it stopped.

Any more ideas folks?

Mine went through a phase of doing it, I know it sounds corny but do you park with the handbrake on? I had for a while and it was doing it, not using the handbrake (trusty brake mk1 at home in the form of a wooden block) and just park in gear, the rattling/knocking has stopped.
I've put it down to I'm going to have to strip the brake drum out, regrease and put it back together. It's probably full of crud and when warm hasn't completely released away from the drum and at slow speeds it's just close enough to drag.

I had exact same thing and it was hand brake drum.
Only happened once car was warm and driven for a while.
They told me the pads in the drum were warped and were replaced.

Thanks guys. The handbrake still looks favourite. Mine only does it after she has been driven for at least half an hour.I might just release the handbrake off completely and try again then.

Thank again

it sounds like the shoes heating up (in the drum brake) over the half period causing the problem to me.

which could be its adjusted too tight or the return shoe springs are broken/worn not working as should be. Cheers
