Hissing when jacking up under axle, problem?
So I was doing some repairs and had axle stands under my front axle. When done, I wanted to drop the car down and decided to jack the vehicle up slightly to remove the stands. However, I jacked it up under the axle instead of the dif, thinking I would be ok. But I quickly heard a hissing sound, like air escaping the axle (or being sucked in). I quickly dropped it back onto the stand and then moved the jack to the dif.

Now, I wonder what the hissing sound was (the axle has a breather pipe, so I imagine there should not be a difference in air pressure inside/outside the axle) and more importantly: should I be worried? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

nothing there that should cause that, wouldn't worry at all, you sure it wasn't the jack? DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

No I am sure it was air coming from/going into the axle Question Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Did the jacking cause the axle to significantly lower on OE side and lift the other?
If so, it might just be the axle oil moving about.

That may draw air down the breather, it'll escape again anyway if it did.

I really wouldn't worry, otherwise it maybe the jack its self. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Hmm, it didn't stay perfectly horizontal no, so I suppose oil may have moved from side to side. Perhaps this caused air to be sucked in or expelled, although I wouldn't call the "un-horizontal-ness" ( Laughing ) to have been significant.

I am wondering if this indicates an issue with the breathing system of the axle, and how can I test it works properly? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

A hydraulic leak in the jack.

Un-clip it axle end, and blow compressed air through it, they come up in the engine bay next to the block.
Or they do on a Puma at least.
They have a curved bent over top, think walking stick / candy cane shape. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Thanks, I am not so worried the breather pipe itself is blocked (I know what it looks like, I cut through it with my angle grinder whilst replacing the bulkhead outrigger Whistle ) but was wondering if the "internal breather thingies" inside the axle may have become clogged in any way. Don't know if that is even possible, just wondering.

(And to all saying the sound came from the jack: thanks for trying to help, but it was not the jack, I am 100% sure) Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

There is nothing in or on the axle which would make a hissing noise. You will not cause air to be drawn in nor expelled by jacing the axle at an angle (it is open to atmosphere and there is a free air surface above the oil).

It is not totally impossible that one or other of the dampers might hiss if compressed or extended, or you have dislodged an air pocket in the cooling system.

I very much doubt that the noise came from the axle, and I think that you are worrying too much!

Oh, and there are no "internal breather thingies" in the axle!

No, it is not so much that I was really worried, more that I was curious. And given that I haven't driven the car since, I wanted to know if there was anything I could/should do to prevent a disaster/expensive invoices if I started to drive it.

Ok thanks all, I can sleep again tonight haha Thumbs Up Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Just a thought, it might have been the shock absorbers settling into position.

I didn't think of that, perhaps you're right. Anyway, I have given this subject a rest (mentally...), thanks to all of you I am no longer concerned it is a problem. Thumbs Up Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000
