Model year for 15P engines?
Sorry if I have missed a thread but I tried doing a search & the results were not helping me.

I'm looking to sell my 90 SW in the next month or so then look for a 110 DC as a replacement. Whilst I would love to spend the summer fitting a 3.9 V8 into a suitable donor vehicle I am realistic enough to know that I simply won't have time so am best to focus on finding a good Td5 & then have it remapped etc.

I have owned a Td5 Disco previously which had a 15P engine and covered 60k miles over 4 years in my ownership with no faults so reckon it's worth looking for a 15P powered DC rather than the earlier 10P motors.

Does anyone know in what model year the 15P was introduced please?

Cheers.

They will also have an EGR cooler on the front of the engine

Thanks all - the facelift dash is a good visual pointer Thumbs Up

Interesting point about EGR cooler as I removed the EGR valve from my D2 which had a 15P engine and don't remember there being any form of cooling associated with it, e.g. a water jacket and plumbing - does anyone have any photos of the EGR valve with cooler please? I still have the one I took off my D2 in the barn somewhere so will dig it out and see if my memory is failing me... Embarassed

If in doubt, check the V5, the engine number should start with 15p or 16p (not 100% if the 16p was just fitted to the D2 but eitherway, don't worry if it says 16p)

So... My old D2 was '53 plate fitted with a 15P engine (confirmed by checking the engine number on an old V5 I have for it from when it had a cherished plate on it) but the EGR valve did not have a water jacket as the photo below shows?

How come the Defenders with 15P engines have it and is it to cool exhaust gas or keep it warm to stop the black sludge blocking the pipe up??

The clue is in the name, "EGR cooler", not "EGR warmer"!

I certainly thought that all 15P engines had the cooler, since it was fitted as part of the emissions compliance upgrade required at the time. My 2002 pre-facelift Disco2 has a 15P engine and has the cooler.

Is it possible that your vehicle was intended for export, or has had the cooler replaced with an earlier pipe?

Most poeple don't bother to remove the cooler when removing the EGR and just leave it in situ and plumbed into the cooling system still. I removed mine and rerouted the associated pipes, mainly just to tidy up the engine bay and remove potential faults.

Bought my D2 from a dealer with one owner & full LR service history & 51k on the clock. No redundant plumbing floating about when I removed the EGR valve that I can recall, suggests it was 'as built' when I removed it?

For no other reason than because I wanted to know the answer I did a bit of trawling on the internet and it seems that for some reason whilst early facelift D2s had an EGR cooler the very late models reverted back to the original version with no cooler whilst the Defender kept it - no idea why Question

That is interesting, I did not know that! I wonder why.

Perhaps LR found that the EGR cooler actually did nothing useful.
