fitting winch...do i need heavier springs?
Hi there i'm fitting D44 bumper and warn zeon 10 winch with wire rope on a TD5 90. Will i need to upgrade my springs?

I put a pretty hefty first four bumper on my 110 with a Superwinch husky on it. The spring sag was about 10mm (this was with yellow/yellow standard front springs which were approx. 3yrs old). My winch has Dyneema rope which probably makes it a little lighter than one with steel wire rope but I assume you Zeon would have synthetic too.

As pretty much all 110s look nose down anyway I decided that I didn't like it anymore and fitted some OME front springs which gave approx. 35mm lift with the winch fitted and make it now sit level with the standard rear springs on my DCPU.

I have a heavy First Four winch bumper and TDS winch with plasma rope on my TD5 90 with standard original springs (2001 !) and it is fine.

I measured mine before and after the winch was fitted and it dropped about 8 to 10mm at the front.

Stay with the standard springs and see how you get on.

Steve,

May I ask what springs do you have at the back, and also whether you needed to fit a DC front prop with the OME springs?

I have in mind at some point fitting OMEs all round to level and lift my DC, and your experiences would be appreciated.

Incidentally I have a Deven 4x4 bumper with a Husky with steel rope on my DC, on standard (DC) springs. It works fine, but if I empty out the back it is rather nose down (but all DCs are nose down due to the 1 tonne suspension). So my answer to the OP would be that you don't need stiffer ot taller springs, but you might choose to fit them later if you're not happy with the standards.

I run a set of new-take off (or was a few years ago) from a MY2012 USW which I recall were brown/purple coded springs.

I don't run any spring isolators on the rear axle but run the castellated rubber discovery ones top and bottom on the front axle which has nicely levelled out my 110. It no longer looks like it is braking hard all the time.

I rarely carry any significant weight in the pickup except the 255/85 spare wheel and tyre and just have the factory PVC soft top on. I do have a blacksheep rear cross member fitted which weighs a fair bit but this is probably compensated by the fact I only now have a 2" receiver towing point which is much lighter than the previous Dixon Bate affair.

I don't currently have a good photo of the side to show the stance of it now but there is only about 5mm difference front/rear from the top of the tyre to the arch spats. I was going to fit OME rears but my calculations indicate that the rear would end up lifted and a bit too stiff without any load in. The 2751 fronts are pretty much identical to the factory 110HD/130 front springs in terms of spring rate and free length. I calculated the lift I would get for various combinations of fitment and the OME2751s + 2x spring isolators per side was perfect.

I don't run a DC front prop, nor extended brake lines. As I still have standard LR gas shocks and standard height turrets the brake lines cant over extend. Haven't noticed any vibration from the front prop at all. I don't really consider it to be lifted, just the height it should be at really. The ride is a little more jarring over bumps with the stiffer front springs but still no worse than I would expect from a defender. Body roll is reduced a fair bit too although I have no ARBs.

I wouldn't worry myself much but remember you can add castellated isolators and still use the same springs.
If you did this on the front only it'd give you around 1/2" lift back plus a better ride quality.

I've got these all round and my 90 is a little nose down too, but frankly I think it drives better and with a load on it evens out.

I wouldn't be surprised if modern winches are somewhat lighter than they used to be too.

IMO the factory springs are as good or better than aftermarket ones

it will sag a little with the weight on the front which spring isolators or box section under the spring cups are ways of lifting it back up.

you can get away with a 35mm lift on a puma without prop vibration issues or premature wear. you dont need to extend brake lines for that type of lift in my experience unless fitting some form of dislocation or longer shocks.

LR 90 HD rear springs on the front will also level a 110 with winch and are not a bad option for the  Cheers

Can anyone with a MY14 (or later) Standard 90 measure the front arch height for me? Just fitted a Warn 9.5ti and Devon clumban bumper and forgot to measure the height of the arches before to see the sag I get...
