United Kingdom 2002 Defender 110 Td5 PU Alveston Red
Discovery2 Td5 R380 gearbox
Can I have some advice please.

Fifth gear on my 2002 Defender 110 td5 has developed a growl between 30-60mph.
With so many Discovery TD5's appearing in breaker's yards these days are the two gearboxes, Discovery and Defender interchangeable or not?

The transfer boxes have different ratios and the gearchange levers are different but can a Defender 2 TD5 gearbox be fitted onto a TD5 Defender without too much difficulty or are they completely different or is so much work involved that I should have the original 'box be reconditioned.

I changed the oil in my 'box with the correct Land Rover product and added a non ptfe friction modifier.
The growl lessened for a while but now it's back and getting louder.

Thank you.

Its possible to swap them but its not a straight swap.

The quadrant selector on the gear selectors is different between the Defender and Disco gearboxes so you cant just remove the gear lever assembly and swap it over.

You can buy a conversion kit to convert the Disco box to suit the Defender lever assembly:

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to explain.

I thought the gear levers were different but not to the extent of not being interchangeable.
I know what to do and what to buy now.

Thank you!

I am not even sure if the bellhousing and the input shaft are the same. Roel

If you have the disco r380 and defender r380 side by side it is possible to remove the defender shift rail and fit it to the disco box in 30mins without any special tools or gaskets, but with a bit of ingenuity. I have done it many times.

Interesting, thank you.

What about the other way round - discovery to defender?
