Thinking about an exhaust (again)
Thinking about a cat back system in stainless to remove the oversized rusty standard one.

I'm not looking for noise (don't see why you would on a diesel straight 4), just something cleaner, shinier and prettier.

I'm personally not a fan of the silencer box behind the wheel, the huge resonator that many have issues with off road and no tail pipe welded on the end!

Has anyone any got anything to add that I should be looking for or any recommendations?

Also from previous research I believe the silencer and resonator removal doesn't add too much noise?

I'd rather remove the silencer and have a smaller resonator.

Try the guys at Pipecraft in Basildon. They will build you whatever you want in mild steel or stainless. They did a great job on my old Discovery.

I've looked at both but I cant see any pictures for the Griffin one to see what you actually get, though they are well regarded.

The Alive one looks just right but cant really find any reviews on it and price top money too (for me).

My experience may not be typical but I had a "made to measure" SS exhaust on mine and I was (and am) pretty disappointed with the execution of the exit - it isn't properly curved and swept out of the corner (I have a 90) and even at the second attempt the vendor managed to disappoint. This wasn't something I imagined would be a problem and wasn't something I screwed down in my specification/description before having the job done. Afterwards is too late of course.

With the non made to measure - i.e. Griffin (look good in the flesh), Alive, and the one TMD sell (but I've forgotten the brand) you can at least check this kind of thing before committing. FWIW I wish I had gone for a Griffin or TMD one...

Per noise and other non-cosmetic considerations - straight through and out after the DPF/CAT on my TDCI hasn't increased noise at all (there is a v.small "tizz" on revs for about one minute after first starting and I presume this is a resonance due to temperature/dimensions of something or other) and has really physically tidied up both back towards and over the rear axle (losing the big muffler was my main motivation) and has made the rear arch more open and moderately easier to jet wash down (it wasn't exactly tricky before...Smile.

I am having a Griffin fitted in a couple of weeks time to my 2.4.
Fortunately I live near to Griffin & James is going to have a play around at giving it a slightly more aggressive sound without being intrusive.

I had a local specialist build a stainless side exit tailpipe about a year or so back. Then I replaced the middle box with straight through pipe. The exhaust isnīt noisier at the tailpipe, but removing the middle box did result in a little more resonance under the cabin, at speed, but not so much to be a bother.

The tailpipe gets the system up and out of the way. It took a couple of goes to get it positioned right so the it didnīt touch the edge of the aluminium bezel under extreme temperatures (heavy trailer in summer), when the system expands. The pipe moved about 6-8mm rearwards, and needed a stiffer rear mounting to reduce this. Works perfectly, and in my view, it suits the Defender really well.

I have Bowler Cat back systems on both the 110 and 90... Stunning pieces of kit but not cheap... No real noise increase (maybe slightly)... However, there is a noticeable improvement in low end turbo spool up...

Not at all. You need to get the TÜV to look at it, and they are very touchy about the db's . Not an issue here. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Twisted full system for the 2.4 sounds great - I got mine with the extra silencer in the mid pipe, so it has no drone in the cabin at all but makes a 4 cylinder transit engine sound quite nice under load! Full stainless steel and the workmanship is great. It was around Ģ600 but well worth it - you pay for what you get
