TD5 Exhaust - Replacement
The rear pipe on my TD5 110 has cracked above the axle, it's getting worse and probably won't pass the MOT in November.

So, do I go for a standard replacement and if so which brand or an uprated version?

The vehicle has a decat downpipe and a straight-through mid-pipe with stage 2 remap, ally I/C and boost box if that makes much difference.

Thanks in advance, Harry

Personally I'd stick with standard on the rear box, or a stainless equivalent. I have a Bosal stainless front and mid on mine, I think it would get too shouty without the rear box too.

I recently fitted a decat pipe & a straight through pipe removing the centre box, also had to buy a new rear box as the bolts were that rusted I couldn't even make them out, just one big rust pile, anyway... sounds really meaty, nice grumble when accelerating and a real throaty sound when ticking over, I don't think the mrs will like it next time she's in the car with me though Laughing Laughing Thumbs Up Optimists say the glass is half full..

Thanks chaps Very Happy The Alive system is a little out of my price range at the mo, Bosal looks to be a good replacement. Having removed the middle box I'd rather keep the small one on the rear Very Happy

Sorry slight hijack, have any of you noticed a decrease in top speed with a straight through/middle box removal exhaust? When I did it on my 90 it definitely struggled to meet speeds I cruised at before the mod, and now I have just taken my 110 on its first longish journey with me and it has no middle box and at 60mph that thing is maxed out and shouting so loud I couldnt hear the missus (not always a bad thing).

No, no problems with reching or maintaining speeds, if anything my fuel economy has got a bit worse, but that don't bother me that much... did you also remove your cat downpipe? Optimists say the glass is half full..

I think it has been removed, weird it happened when I did the mod on my 90. Literally lost 10kmh at top speeds so was thinking its done the same to this, but do you reckon the downpipe could be the problem?

If anything mine feels more poky. Revs more freely and happily holds speed!

Will happily do 80-85 on the flat and hold 60 with 2.6T of trailer on the back and boxes on the roof.

Don't find it to be too loud either... Noticeable yes, but not "loud" from the inside. From the outside however....

Have a standard exhaust system on the 90 TD5 with Cat
Stage 1 Alive remap and blanked EGR

Thinking of going to an Alive decat exhaust but should I?

Would it be better to go decat with a pre 2002 MY part that only costs £180
What are the advantages of a new exhaust apart from it will come de catted and be stainless steel?
How much noisier is the Alive exhaust, don't want boy racer noise or waking up the neighbours

Not going Stage 2 as I cannot see the cost v performance improvement gains and I'm happy with the Stage 1

Any thoughts people?

Happy New Year all

Just FYI there are new emission testing machines being slowly rolled out across the UK MOT Stations... They are supposedly sophisticated enough to detect the removal of a CAT and or DPF... I know of one thats been fitted near me and they have failed a few cars for having CAT removal....
It bears thinking about before you go and spend your hard earned on a De-CAT pipe etc etc..

I was planning on getting the MOT completed by the same dealer on the basis it would be hard to fail something they fitted

I sort of get your point Simon... But in essence you're asking someone to pass something that they know to be illegal... If they get caught.. (which is highly unlikely... But still a possibility with random inspections).. Then they are likely to lose their MOT licence and face a hefty fine...
The days of removing what we want from our Vehicles is coming to an end unfortunately.... I would dearly love to be able to remove the DPF from both my Defenders... However, After speaking to Pete at BAS and knowing people in the trade, Everyone just said don't bother, At some point in the near future you'll have to re-fit it and the next step I believe that our government wants to roll out is road side testing..

I have gone through all this recently.

First....CAT removal. Did improve throttle response but no actual performance increase. However it droned at certain speeds on the motorway so l refitted the CAT.

Centre/rear replacement. Fitted Britpart but the rear part was not a good fit....the tail pipe was 1cm from the crossmember and not straight. So l bought an OE rear section at £140 which was a work of art after the aftermarket one.

The Britpart centre box fitted OK but there was a loud drone at about 65mph. I took it off and fitted an OE (new take-off from Ebay £69) and the droning was much reduced.
lf you hit the Britpart centre box with your knuckles it rang like a bell, the OE produced a dull thud with the same test.

I might try CAT removal again as l think my original centre box was knackered.

I'd recommend the SS stainless exhaust, can be bought from Paddocks for a very reasonable price, I've used these on a number of tuned vehicles and wouldn't entertain anything else now Smile
