Defender 2003 TD5 Black smoke and rattle
Hi Guys I'm looking for some advice and maybe a check list before I talk to the garage about the following problem.

Vehicle starts first time from cold and revs normally with slight smoke, nothing unusual or worrying.
When pulling away in first and into second gear there is a slight rattle from the engine at what Im guessing is about 2000rpm and thick black smoke comes out then clears as the revs increase. There is no loss in power. Once the engine is up to working temperature the problem disappears and everything runs fine with no smoke and no power loss but Im concerned that a problem is looming and want to get it sorted.
I have checked the ECU loom for oil at the ECU end and its fine.
How can I check the MAF and EGR ? Ive heard these can stick open/closed and cause problems at low revs under load!
is there anything else I can check to help diagnose this ?
your advice is appreciated,
many thanks
Andy

Disconnect the MAF unit and see if it's any better.

Check also the air hoses between turbo and intercooler and intercooler and engine. They can fail from inside forming a "flap". "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Also check the turbo actuator arm is moving.

Sorry to say it sounds a bit like mine just before the turbo went bang.
