puma 2.2 oil service light
How many other people out there are getting serious problems with Oil service light coming on at short intervals approx every 3,000 miles .
I have 2 nearly new Defenders..they both do it .I know it's because they only mainly do short journeys.But that's what I bought them for.
It is costing me much more than the advertised sevice interval of 12,000 miles.
Can't change the oil myself as the light needs resetting by a dealer.
Had Land Rovers for years but not happy with this state of affairs.

There's a thread about how to reset the oil service light:

1. Ignition ON pressed both “brake” and “accelerator pedal” full down for 15 seconds

2. Oil light started to flash.

3. Turned the ignition OFF and left it for around 2 mins.

4. Oil service indicator cleared.

If this doesn't work the first time repeat it.

Thank you...Will be very useful when the warranty runs out.....
In the meantime trying to get it sorted by Land Rover.....
Last time oil light came on 1,900 mi after last change!

I'd be more concerned about why it is coming on at such short intervals. As far as I am aware service interval is purely down to 12 months or 12,000 miles or is it 'sensing' the need for a service?

I know short journeys are not good for the DPF, is this causing the issues? James

Mines just come on, 500 miles after a full service and reset by a dealer. Would be interested to know if its a glitch or the car is saying change my oil now.

The ecu calculates % diesel in oil after active dpf regeneration. It calculates this weather the regeneration was completed or not. The occasional high speed (50mph +) run for 30 minutes should provoke a passive dpf regeneration so the active ones (which cause the service light to come on) should happen slightly less frequently Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I realise that's the problem.
But I bought them to use for what I do ie an average of twenty miles every day driving round locally with perhaps once a week a good blast around pulling a full sheep trailer for the Hi cap .The 90 does school runs and shopping.
I like the pulling power of the puma engine but think it's poor if I have to cough up for an oil change on average every 3,000 miles. The hi cap light has just lit up at 1,900 miles after last change!
I have had 2 Td5s ,a couple of 300 series a 200 series and a several older ones best forgotten about ,which all did the job.

If this is what they are supposed to do there must be more people like me not very happy.

I think the point is that the older engines didn't have a management system that would actually warn you that you're using it in an inefficient way. Im sure not changing the oil at this interval and resetting the warning light would be ok - but would only put you in the ballpark of treating it the same as the previous vehicles you've had.

Can you not just do a longer trip in it every now and again to let the engine run properly and sort itself out? Even for my girlfriend with her normal short trips day car we take it out for a long drive instead of a different vehicle every now and again so that it gets a good run out.

You could certainly contact your LR dealer and express that you aren't happy with it and ask their advice in regards to servicing schedule, oil changes and where you stand with your warranty. They will probably advise you to run the vehicle around the block a few times occasionally to prevent damage and the warning light notifying you of the damage you may be gradually doing.

DEFINITELY DON'T SELF RESET THE LIGHT WITHOUT CHANGING THE OIL! the ecu has calculated 7% diesel in oil. Resetting the light and carrying on will destroy the engine as diesel seriously reduces oil lubrication. Not to mention it would void the warranty so the damaged engine wouldn't be covered Shocked 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

In that case it sounds like the dealer needs a questioning as to what is best to do but surely a proactive approach to stopping it happening repeatedly is for the best...

Interesting observation about 2.2 engine oil. After 3000 KM, the oil on the dipstick of my TDCi 2.4 still is a pretty transparant light grey. The oil in a collegue's TDCi 2.2 after same KM would be pitch black. My truck has done +80K KM, my collegue's truck only 25K KM. Wonder if this difference has to do with the diesel contamination by the DPF recycling.

The OP original question was are other people having the same problem. I don't think I have heard anyone else complaining of a similar issue on here?

It seems there a few cases if you search. I do a similar journeys to the OP and mine came on at approx. 9000miles so it definitely isn't a case of they all do it.

Hi if any one out there is remotely interested .

Got onto Land Rover Customer service

After Numerous journeys to my nearest approved Dealer (Harwoods) a 40 minute drive away.

They have been no help to me at all apart from wanting to give me cups of cofee and complimentary tins of mints.

Landrover have said nothing wrong with vehicles no help with warranty No advice apart from quoting the hand book at me.

Don't know if any one has any ideas ...the hand book says I should get a little light come on to warn me to go and drive around the countryside..But I have never seen this mythical light on either vehicle even on first turning the key in the morning... I just get an oil service indicator.

As far as Driving for 20 minutes at a steady 40 - 70 mph .Where I live it would take me 20 minutes to drive to anywhere where I could do that legally and then would have to be at night to ensure I don't get stuck in traffic once I am there.

Anyone got any ideas of how often I need to do this?

My Local dealer to his credit has offered to buy back both vehicles.But this doesn't actually address the problem and would leave me to have to go out and buy 2 different vehicles.

For the meantime I will keep changing the oil about (at 1,000 miles at the moment) and keeping records.

Thanks Land Rover. After 40 years of driving them I finally managed to buy 2 new ones.
Now realising once they have got your money they don't give a ....
