Hi Guys,

As frequent followers of my ramblings in my 200Tdi Rolling restoration will know, she has very sadly left me to return to Land Rover Bodyshops for remedial work to its paintwork.

As agreed with the parties involved, I have been put back in a Defender which has been hired Via SHB for the 2/3 months it will take for the remedial (complete respray) work to be done.

So having had it for a week here are my initial thoughts for the 2.2Tdci 110 S/w

Firstly, wow its quiet. I now get why people who have only driven these find 200Tdi's so noisy! They are noisy in comparison! This thing cruises along quiet happily at 70 and is almost silent!

Secondly, Wow it drinks! I to it on Monday evening with 3/4 of a tank, I did my usual trips and by Thursday evening it needed fuel, Topped it off to a full tank and now on Sunday its only got half a tank left. I have only done 600 miles! My 200Tdi does 500 on a tankfull how can this 22 year newer vehicle be so bad on fuel?

Thirdly, wow the heater is amazing. The dash is nicer, the whole seating cabin area is much more nicer so I'm sold on that. Perhaps sold enough to look for a tdci in the future. Or a td5 and then bulkhead/dash switch.

4. The tyres are so quiet and actually quite nice! I am surprised how well they have done, they grip well, are quiet, handle most situations well.

5. I has a light bar which makes it 20% cooler than most.

6. I had forgotten how heavy the back door is with a tyre on it. Definitely made the right choice by having one with the bonnet spare.

7. Seats not only seem more comfortable but higher up? Its odd, they feel very different to my 200Tdi version but these do feel very different. I suppose the difference is my 200Tdi feels like a old wing back in a country club, whereas the Tdci feels like more of a new Dfs chair. Bit more upright. Cant quite put my finer on it but still very comfortable.

8. May be Kent specific but the radio reception is horrendous. Lots of interference and even big radio stations like radio 2 and Radio 4 cutting out completely despite being the "upgraded" Radio set. (this was the same on my 200Tdi though, any one else or just me?)

9. Its very red. When my girlfriend first saw it she said "Omg, did you hire it from baywatch?" I quite like it but would make some mods if it was mine, the silver would go in place of black and the boosts would be swapped for sawtooths with black roof. As I say, it is very different from my 200Tdi.

If I had both on the drive at the moment I would take my 200tdi, as I trust it and know it better and the fuel economy is far better.

If I had to carry lots of people the SHB 110 as it has got much comfier seats and is quieter

If I had to work it hard my 200tdi as it is just so much stronger and feels much more planted.

If I had to go very long distance, I would probably put a Roverdrive on my 200Tdi, the Tdci is nice but at the moment I don't quite trust it yet. Only done 600 miles in it this week so not quite enough to get to know it yet.

Jury is still out I will probably have a much better idea of it in Feb.

I'd take my 90 300tdi everytime over the 110 2.2. No reason that I can articulate clearly I just prefer driving it, despite the fact its a pick up and I'm over 6ft! If you think the SHB red is bright drive a few miles in a genuine G4.......you can't get away with anything!

Quite agree Huttopia. One benefit of the bright red is it does seem to stay cleaner for longer.

Quite disgusted with the fuel economy though Big Cry

When I got it on Monday evening it had 3/4 of a tank, I had used all this by Thursday evening so needed to refuel. I brimmed it and this morning had to fill it again having only done 390 miles on a tank.

Or just transplant a TDCi dash and heater set up into your 200. That thought had crossed my mind for my 90, but sadly ££ wont allow for the moment and TBH, I have never really had any complaint about the heater.

Hate to say it, but yes i think they are. I'm getting about the same from mine, and try as I might, I never bettered 380 miles. God knows how Caterham gets the mileage he does 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

What MPG are you getting?

Mine works out averaging 28mpg on the daily run to work / town and A roads.

On a good run its up to 32mpg

110 SW


I'm happy with that

I'm using an app to track mine and its showing 25mpg as an average. Most of the time its back and forth along the A5 to Tamworth, which goes from crawling traffic to flowing dual carriage way and back to crawling, so I know that wont be helping, but even on a run sat at 65-70mph its not doing any better than 26-27mpg. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Umm... How many miles has it done?... I know our 110 was abysmal to start with... managing around 340-360 on a tank... this seemed to improve once it'd passed 6000 miles... it jumped up to 370-390... We then had it mapped by BAS to 170AB spec with an Alive ultimate intercooler (the best at the time) and a Bowler motorsport exhaust (cat back)... it'll do 420-430 all day long and will do 450-460 if you drive it sensibly (not often that happens though Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter )

Tim It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse...

Try 60mph on a run and you'll see an improvement.

Mine is a 200Tdi, but if I go above that it will only do 30mpg or so, keeping the cruising speed between 55 and 60 (i.e. still fast enough to get past the HGVs easily) will see a reliable 32+.

Never seen more than 27mpg out of the Tdcis that I've used, however the pattern of use wasn't always conducive to good fuel economy. But my Tdi does around that with 2.5 tonnes on the back, so shows the difference!
