My bolts are purchased from a local bolt supplier on an industrial estate. Tend to get BZP ones. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Make sure you get 8.8 grade or better. Believe that they are m12 yes

I have just bought some 10.9 grade but M14 as they go through the body of the hitch and I am not fixing to the rear cross member so hopefully thats me moving forward now. |

Yes, M14 will just fit through the casing of the hitch.
I can't see that you'd particularly need HT ones with 14mm diameter, I think they'd be plenty strong enough! (as said, just make sure they're 8.8 at least. are 12. HT ones?) Your crossmember will be coming away before 4x M14 snap! |

8.8 is the minimum grade usually referred to as "Hugh tensile". Everything below that is usually 4.something cheese grade bolts.

I have a standard ride height (new genuine springs) '07 110 SW with which I tow my Penman. I use a Nato hitch bolted directly to the crossmember as it would be fitted on any military 110, and it is as high as it is possible to get before fouling the spare wheel. I also run 7.50 x 16 military tyres and wheels. I found that mine tows significantly nose-down, although you don't feel that this causes a problem in its driving behaviour. I suspect it would need a 2-3 inch lift to level it up entirely if one felt that way inclined.
In case you change your mind, if you bolt directly to the crossmember you need high-tensile (at least 8.8 ) M12 bolts as it has thread inserts built in. The length will depend on if you use of a spreader plate between hitch and crossmember - I use an old dixon bate slider at the moment just to spread the load across the crossmember face as it isn't that strong with a side load and a relatively small mating face of the Nato hitch. The Penman is absolutely bulletproof. It has a payload of something over 2 tons but a loadbed only 5' x 6'. I reckon it is the toughest trailer I have seen and i've spent a couple of weeks at the Ifor Williams factory installing machinery. I think it will outlive me |

Slightly off topic Lee - but that is exactly the setup I'm looking for. I've currently got my towball attached directly to the rear NAS step, but having lifted the vehicle 2" its now too high for trailers. Your setup would extend it down by a few inches which is perfect. I presume that lower part under the ball is suitable for being recovered from? Can you tell me what that unit is called please, and any suggestions of where to get it from would be appreciated. |
